From Wikipedia

" The Cox family also sued Washington's Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), claiming that the agency prioritized Joshua's parental rights over the safety of the boys and facilitated their deaths. While a lower court initially ruled against the Coxes, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed this ruling and allowed the case to proceed to trial in January 2019. Susan's family also pressured state lawmakers in Washington and Utah to pass a bill that would restrict or block visitation rights for parents being investigated for murder. "

@skatting44   I have always blamed the Judge and the social services woman.  she should have realized by the way he was acting when she brought the boys, that something was wrong, and should have taken the boys and made a fast exit, the heck with what she was told to do, leave them.

Why does it always take death of innocents to get a law passed that should have been on the books from the get-go.

Did they ever say where Josh's mother was (Steve's wife)?

I usually do an internet search after watching Dateline shows and I found an article about Susan's father and Josh's mother in the Deseret News in 2014.  The court awarded Susan's father $2.3 million from life insurance but the end of the article said Josh's mother would receive more than $756,000 from other policies.  It blows my mind that his family would be able to receive money in the aftermath of all this.

I looked for info about Josh's mom.  She divorced his father in 1992. (Josh and Susan were married in 2001.)    His mom claimed the father exposed the children to pornography and didn't set limits for the kids.  I found it odd that the court awarded Josh's dad custody of the three boys considering all that the mother alleged.  She got custody of a daughter who eventually went to live with the dad (I found that odd too).  Maybe the mom was afraid of the boys and didn't want custody since she claimed the father turned them against her and one time Josh came after her with a butcher knife?

Agree with you  from what  I read.   At the least very dysfunctional. Boy would I have been out of there with my children as soon as the Father acted weird . To think that a Father would expose minors to pornography . The article referred to  the police finding  all levels of pornography  children, and  other things that are so disgusting .

There are alot of deaths of children across the country at the hands of their parents  even when Social Services are involved . Do our  laws not protect children or  do these Social Services staff  or Judges wear blinders ? You hear of so many children put back into the home where they were abused .

@skatting44 Yes....the child welfare system in WA. State is corrupt...and some people needed to be fired after this if not jail time.  Many innocent children have fallen through the cracks and have died in WA. State due to incompetence.

Sometimes (not always) there isn't any proof.

And people wouldn't believe it, anyway.

Sometimes these dysfunctional people are 'upstanding' in the community.

What 'rings a bell' is the In-law stealing her various items.  As 'souvineers' so to speak. Very obsessed.

Which, from what I've read and heard, is very psychopathic.

Enough said for now.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

Re: Dateline October 4, Susan Powell Case

Such a disturbing twisted case.  Sadly, Susan felt such a tie to her religious beliefs, she couldn't leave the marriage even though she was well aware of what was wrong. The FIL was one sick SOB who did a number on everyone around him. Josh became a monster because of him.  The other brother committed suicide which leads me to believe he not only participated in the murder, but was as twisted as his father and siblings.  The saddest part is that everyone who knew the family knew there was something wrong with these people, but no one had the power to rescue Susan and the children.  The courts and social services failed them, but I think in a way so did some of her relatives and friends.  As her father said at the end, he believes some women stay way too long in abusive relationships.   I would be curious to know what attracted Susan to her husband and when did she see signs that maybe all wasn't right with him and his family.

Re: Dateline October 4, Susan Powell Case

I watched the entire show but had trouble sleeping after that.  What a deeply disturbed family.   I remember the case and knew the father was interested in Susan but I had no idea the extent of his obsession.  Even if she had left Josh, I think he would have harmed those precious little boys when he had visitation.

Interesting to hear about the mother in law.  I wondered what happened to her.  At least she divorced Steve and got away.

Sure hurt my heart to watch this.

Hi, ThinkingCamile. I just listened to the recording of the 911 call by the Social Services lady. She didn’t have enough time to grab the boys back. When Powell opened the door, he pulled the kids inside and then slammed the door in her face. She smelled gasoline and was trying to call 911 to come immediately, telling the 911 operator that it was an extreme emergency. The 911 operator reacted by telling the Social Services lady that police were responding to more important matters first...in so many word. I can’t remember the 911 operator’s exact wording, but this lady was being awful to the desperate pleas from the social services lady. The lady could hear screams from inside the home. Powell was busy cutting into the boys with an axe. Then the house exploded into flames.  You can hear the whole thing on a YouTube. YouTube has many of the shows about the case. There are some good episodes from HLN with Nancy Grace.  The original Dateline from years ago is there. There’s film of the actual writings of Powell and of him singing creepy love songs he wrote to his DIL. Sick. This man would buy pantyhose in the brand and size his DIL wore. He’d sneak into her laundry, steal her worn pantyhose and substitute the new pantyhose for her used ones.

You can hear interviews with the daughter, Josh’s sister, on a YouTube. She cooperated with the authorities, after Susan’s disappearance, suspecting her brother, father, and possibly another brother. She wore a wire to get more information. That’s how police were able to get a warrant to search Powell Sr’s Place. When they searched, they found videos and photos of women and children. He was then arrested and sentenced.

Susan was so creeped out by the FIL that she would stay at her parents house while her husband would stay with his father. Her parents can be viewed in interviews on YouTube. They only got custody after Powell Sr’s arrest. Powell Jr. was allowed supervised visitation, but the judge allowed that visitation to be in Powell Jr’s rented home.
