Just read that.  It's sad, she was favorite to watch.

Re: Dame Maggie Smith, 89, RIP

I am so sad to see this!

What an amazing woman; an incredible actress.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was a classic and A Room with a View was one of my favorites. Violet Crawley will long live in our hearts and memories.

May she rest in peace.

A luminous Desdemona in the film version of Othello, 1965, opposite Olivier.  Her first Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress:

Such sad news.  I remember her in Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and no one else could have played Violet Crawley!  Great actress.  R.I.P.

Oh, my goodness, @They Call Me MR Wilkes ,  I didn't know.

Love each of the roles you, @DSD2  and @twinsister  mention.

Even in a popular entertainment, like the Taylor/Burton uber-soap extravaganza, "The V.I.P.'s",  she gave tremulous but spirited life to the secretary secretly in love with her boss ( Rod Taylor).   Could play anything!

RIP to one of the all-time greats!
