ITA.
I might remember a lot of the worst ads but 9 times out of 10 I don't remember WHAT the ad was for.
Furthermore, it's a major turn off and would steer me away from patronizing the company even if I do remember what they are selling.
Granted, the notion was that there are also others who remember the ads and are not put off by them. But - ads CAN be entertaining and provide all the pertinent information about the product.
One thing that seems to be a trend now is having an entertainment piece for an ad that has absolutely nothing to do with the product. One good example is the line of ads for Subaru with the animals. One has a family of dogs in the car - actually there are a few in this line. One recent one has a guy and his dog, etc. Lovely ads - absolutely lovely. But nothing about them tells me anything about why I should purchase a Subaru.

I agree chicken. I also remember when actors and actresses who made movies (i.e. "movie stars") like Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, etc. wouldn't be caught dead making a commercial in the US. I've always heard Brad Pitt made a lot of them in Europe.
Now since TV seems to have been 'annointed' with umm movie stars on night time TV I guess it seems to be "OK" for them to make commercials too. If I sound like I'm bent out of shape about it, it's because it bothers me that people who make movies have always thought they were better than people on TV.
I think most of us would never buy something just because a famous person told us to buy it.
However, the young generation coming along might tell a different story. My granddaughter comments constantly to me about this product or that product and how good it is. Good, not because a TV or Movie Star likes it, but because she saw it over and over on You Tube. My daughter fights like crazy trying to limit viewing You Tube, etc. My grandchildren are unbelievable readers but just the small amount allowed has influence.
Young people who are on You Tube and other web sites are (with many youngesters) more popular than people we view as stars. I was recently watching TMZ and the reporter was teased because there was a young kid standing outside and these teen girls went crazy over him. It seems that he's a You Tube sensation. Even TMZ wasn't aware of this kid. Dancing With the Stars had You Tube sensations on their show.
So, back to commercials. I can't imagine having children in this day and age. Good grief. Trying to teach them things that just because you saw it on You Tube, etc doesn't mean it's true.
I'll go sit down and be quiet on this subject. I guess there are some good things about being old. I don't have to worry about raising children. I just sit and shake my head and observe and say, "Thank you" as I look toward Heaven! Ha!

I'm so tired of the Cialis (and such) commercials about guys who can't do the deed that I actually sent an email to Greta Van Sustern on FOX News telling her I'm a (then 67) year old widow who has not interest in anyone connected with Cialis or such and I find it anoying that FOX runs the commercials several times during her show, over and over.
I told her that I understand where some people want and need it but several times a show is going over-board. I said if they felt the need to do that then they should run adds about PMSing, Period cramps, old age and everything else. Ha!
She didn't reply. Ha!
I love this post!!!

There is a commercial for a natural hot dog ( Applewood Farms, maybe?) where a Mom is sitting at her dining room table interviewing a piece of beef man dressed in a beef costume with a needle in his arm........he is telling her how natural he is. The follow up commercial is the same beefy guy in the supermarket with his beefy son. Although I think they are hysterical, they have a big ewwwww factor.
