While most couples that marry early are pretty close to the same age, it's usually because they met in high school or college.  These were the people they had access to socially, so that's who they married.

That changes dramatically with second or third marriages.  A divorced man's ex is probably close to his age, but his next wife will be years younger.  They don't continue to pursue women their own age. 

As for women, at some point vitality means a LOT more than actual age. 

Another consideration is that if older men are looking for a wife, they are really looking for a care giver for their last years.    An older woman sees through that, so men have to opt for a younger woman.

For many, many centuries marriage was about security in families and countries, and social status.  Love was almost never a top priority.

IMO, people should do what makes them happy, regardless of the age of the people you date.
