My cousin's DH had kidney cancer and had a kidney removed.  His doctors all said they got it all and no chemo or radiation was needed.  A few years later, his back was hurting and they found it had gone to his back and lungs.  He didn't live long after that and each doctor blamed the other for not following up with him regularly after his kidney removal.  I think that is the key--continued follow-up, just in case it comes back.  That way, they can catch it early if it returns.
