‘Below Deck’ Captain Mark Howard’s Death Sparks Investigation....

News broke on Friday, October 29, that the season 1 Below Deck Mediterranean captain, who led the Ionian Princess, had died. In a police report obtained by Us Weekly at the time, the Fernandina Beach Police Department confirmed that Mark’s wife, Susan Howard, was the first one to report him dead after coming home to find his body on Wednesday, October 27. The report noted that there were “blood droplets on the floor that appeared suspicious in nature” next to his body upstairs in the room above the garage. The late Bravo personality had “blood coming from the area of the right side of his face” and appeared to have died several days prior.   According to the docs, the scene was turned over to investigations department after Corporal Carey, who was one of the officers to arrive at the house, questioned why some of the “blood evidence at the scene could not be explained initially.” The responding officers, who received a call around 9:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday of a deceased person, stayed at the scene to help the investigators finish documenting the area with photos before uploading them to the evidence server. Us confirmed on Friday that the investigation is still ongoing. Following the news of Mark’s death, many fans of the show shared heartfelt tributes to the former captain. “I am so saddened to hear of Captain Mark Howard’s passing. He was very kind,” one Twitter user wrote on Friday in response to Tiffany Copeland’s confirmation of the former Bravo star’s passing. Another user tweeted: “Oh no how incredibly sad.   • Slide 2 of 7: Howard’s wife returned home from a dog show in Ocala, Florida, on October 27, which is when she found her husband’s body, according to the Fernandina Beach Police Department’s report. Susan was home for approximately 30 minutes when she realized it was “odd” that her husband hadn’t come down from upstairs to greet her. She reportedly went upstairs to the “room above the garage where Mark frequently stays” and noticed his body behind some boxes lying on the floor near the mattress he slept on. She then phoned the police.
  • Slide 3 of 7: Upon arrival on scene, the police noticed “blood droplets on the floor that appeared suspicious in nature.” The report stated that the former captain was “laying up against a plastic shelf in the room” and there appeared to be “blood coming from the area of the right side of his face.” According to the documents, the responding officers “could not tell if trauma was present.” Susan was noted as having “blood on the right leg of her pants” when police looked over the scene, but she reportedly advised that it “must have come from when she found Mark.”

She later explained that she “last had contact” with her husband the same day at “approximately 23:33 hours by text,” per the police report. “It was apparent that Mark had been deceased for several days,” the report noted, adding that contact was made with Doctor DeVane by Corporal Carey on October 27. The doctor “advised on a recorded line that if the death was not deemed suspicious, he would sign the death certificate.”
