Battle of the Network Stars

[ Edited ]

The new series will air on ABC June 29 at 9:00 p.m. EST.  Did you watch back in the day?  Will you watch the reboot?

I used to watch the older series and I'm looking forward to this new one!

Below is from deadline.com:

The original series from ABC Sports began in 1976 and continued for 13 years. The 10-episode summer event, set at Pepperdine University in Malibu, will pit teams of current and classic TV stars from multiple eras and different genres against one another in a variety of athletic games. Fielding of the teams will be based on the TV characters from over the years to the current day – cops vs. TV sitcoms, White House vs. lawyers, TV moms & dads vs. TV kids, etc. ESPN’s Mike Greenberg and Joe Tessitore will host, and Cassidy Hubbarth and Cari Champion are the sideline reporters.

Here are the 20 teams (100 stars), blue and red, competing against each other in separate episodes(* = returning to “Battle of the Network Stars”):

• TV Sitcoms (Bronson Pinchot, Tom Arnold, Dave Coulier, AJ Michalka, Tracey Gold)

Re: Battle of the Network Stars

I can't wait! I used to watch the original one when I was younger, and I always looked forward to it. I think it was on Sunday afternoon, right?

I just hope they don't "reality show" this one and make a farce of it! Smiley Wink

@wildcat fan  Yes, I remember this show and I am looking forward to the reboot.  Thank you for taking the time to list the participants and the description of the show.  I have seen the commercials but can barely read any of the names as they quickly are shown on the screen.Cat Very Happy

Re: Battle of the Network Stars

I will check it out. I used to love this show as a kid.

I was was a little disappointed with the stars. I thought it would be current network stars.

That is how it used to be.

I would have preferred to see the men from Chicago Fire and Chicago PD. Smiley Happy.    Or other current actors.

Re: Battle of the Network Stars

I liked the old series so I'll watch the new.  Actors "out of their element" It's more like a saturday pick up game than League sports.  Hope it's just fun and the Competitive edge doesn't overtake the games. Will be curious to see what spin this day and age puts on the old show.

Re: Battle of the Network Stars

I found an article on Mental Floss's website called "A Brief History of Battle of the Network Stars."  One of the facts was the original debuted at a time when TV stars didn't make big salaries like some do today, so many of the stars were excited about the prize money.  Each member of the winning team got $20,000.  As a comparison, each member of the Pittsburg Steelers earned $15,000 for winning the Super Bowl that year.  I wonder what the winners will get this season, if anything.  From the schedules I've seen, it looks like they'll just have weekly winners rather than a tournament style grand champion.  For some I guess they'd just be glad to be back in the spotlight.  It would be nice if they could win something, though, or at least have a donation made to their favorite charities.

Here's how to find that Mental Floss article if anyone is interested:

Thanks for posting. Can't wait.  Loved watching this show back in the 70s.  I love the idea of the stars coming back and not the new ones since I probably wouldn't know who they were.  Why is Kelly Osbourne under variety?  LOL  I guess because of being a celeb on Red Carpet on E!?

Re: Battle of the Network Stars

@SWEET I agree about having the "classic" stars come back.  I said the same thing when my husband was telling me about this reboot.  I said I probably wouldn't even know who most of those stars are!  That happens to me sometimes with Dancing with the Stars.  😊

I guessed Kelly O. is on team Variety because she's done a variety of programs?  I wondered about that too!  Besides the E! fashion shows, she's been on talk shows and a reality show with her family.

I was trying to figure out why Ted McGinley is listed as a TV Dad.  I remember him from Happy Days and The Love Boat.  I don't recall any roles where he was a dad.  I'm sure it will come to me, or maybe somebody here can remind me.
