Yesterday I saw a bit of the beginning of the "Joyce" episode. I could not believe how fast she was eating the lasagna. She was just shoveling it in by the forkful. I thought it looked good. I would have savored each bite.

They claim to like food so much. But then wolf it down. I can not believe how nice a breakfast many of the care givers make. I would be thrilled if someone made some sausage, bacon and eggs for me for breakfast. I would sit and enjoy the meal not try and race through it.

Re: 600 LB Life Watchers

[ Edited ]

Husband and I have this discussion every time it comes on.  Why aren't these obese patients taught a whole foods protocol.  A "nutritionist" showed up at the house and threw away products (that should have been thrown away and still lots of bottles and processed/low fat products on the shelf/refrig and unhealthy high fat products i.e. cheese)...but no comments regarding what they should be eating.

Classes should be offered in a professional setting, before even being considered for surgery.  Otherwise, you are setting up the patient for failure.  The patients need to learn nutrient dense whole foods ( eat lots of fresh produce...high nutritional value, low caloric content).   Measuring out small amount of unhealthy high fat food (which is what I always see on these patient's plates) is living in constant restriction and eating food that over time creates disease.

By the way, Kaiser is teaching these nutritional classes focusing on whole foods.  I attended one out of interest, there were several people in the room who were planning on bariatric surgery.  There is progress being made on this front.

@Laura14

Where are you getting your information from?  Sour cream is not loaded with sugar (are you thinking of cottage cheese which does have more sugar?).  Read the label on a container of sour cream for example, Breakstone. Two TBSP has 60 calories (calories from fat 50) or 6 grams of fat, hince the fat free version the nutritionist suggested. It has 1g of sugar.  Cheese has even more calories.  For instance, Sargento Cheddar Cheese Snack Stick. 1 little snack stick is 80 calories or 7 grams of fat.  Cheese is not the better of the two.  Also, cheese has a lot of sodium and saturated fat in it where sour cream does not.  Saturated fat contributes to raising cholesterol levels. And sour cream is every bit a real food product.  All it is is cultured cream and milk (cheese contains the same ingredients).  Where are you getting "highly processed" from?

@Pancho I was referencing fat free sour cream.  If you look at what they replace the fat with, it's sugar.  Highly processed compared to the real thing which is cream and cultures.  No sugar at all which to me is ten times worse than fat.

Like I said, neither should be on the diet but always pick real food over sugar any day.  The correct response should have been a recommendation to switch to hummus or smashed avocado if you want something creamy to eat.

What always amazes me is how much fast food they eat. They love their fast food.

@Suzeecat That's my main question.  Do they teach food prep and or basic cooking techniques?  I just came across this show and my guess is it's probably all in the information packet but along with therapy and PT, you would think he would include a session to teach food prep basics. Most of the people I have seen so far grew up hard without Grandma's Sunday dinners so they need to learn what a lot of us take for granted. A few basic recipes and food swaps would work wonders.

I actually just saw an episode where he did send a nutritionist out to one girl.  This person actually suggested fat free sour cream as a better choice from the light sour cream they were using while taking away the real cheese she had as not to be chosen at all.  Smiley Surprised

Have we lost our minds?  Let's give the obese person the product loaded with sugar but take away a real food containing just milk and cultures known to benefit gut health.  I actually felt sorry that someone trying to save her life was being steered in a very wrong direction by a supposed expert.  Neither choice is great for a diet plan but taking away a real food product for a highly processed sugared one is insane.

i saw this one,  and agree, but in the case of yesterday's PT,  I think total calories in/out is the goal

That's another thing that gets me.  When they travel, they are forced to eat fast food.  Gimme a break.  When I travel, I regularly hit up supermarkets and Super Target.  It's amazing the healthy salad, fruit, or sandwich ingredients you can get if you turn a corner and drive past Taco Bell.

@jackthebear Makes sense.  I still think they should teach them to grab better food while they are making the switch and not fall for the head fakes.

McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's all have salads. Mc Donald's has 2 grilled chicken salads, Burger King has a chicken club salad and Wendy's has a Baja Salad, BLT Cobb Salad, Apple Pecan Chicken Salad and Spicy Chicken Caesar Salad.

So even if they went to a fast food place there are better choices than what they are making. Plus they not only seem to get a "meal", they also get additional items. They are not even trying to cut down on the amount of food they are consuming.

I don't know how they can eat so much and lay down. It makes my stomach hurt just watching them lol.
