I find the sizing with sets (tops and overshirts) to be consistent but unwearable.  For example in today's Susan Graver show-- there is an overshirt and top in the 2X--the shirt is 58 for the bust and 50 for the top.  Normally the 2x size is 53 in most of her tops; therefore the shirt will be way oversized but the top will not fit at all.  Does anyone else see this discrepancy.  Every time she does a 2-piece, this is always the case.

@sparkkyI wasn't watching, but I do know it's been years since I  successfully bought a set from anyone.  Even when I was working and wanted to wear good wool suits, I had to buy separates in order to get a proper fit.

I know with a tank and an overshirt, the tank bust is always smaller, but 8 inches?  For me either the tank would be too small or the overshirt would slip right off my shoulders!

In the last two years i have found alot of SG's clothing measurements have fluctuated often.........so i have had issues myself...

The shirt has has to be bigger than the tank.  Otherwise you wouldn't be able to get it on and button it.  The tank probably adds an inch or two to your bust measurement.  

Depending on the style and fabric of the shirt.  For a knit tank ... you can sometimes go with a negative ease for something close fitting.

For woven fabric shirt -- the amount of additional ease depends on style.  If it has shirring at the back yoke ... there may be a lot of inches between the two bust measurements.

You have to take fabric and style into consideration when deciding what to buy.  And, read the description so you know to expect.

For instance, yeterday I wore a tank/ shirt combo.  The mesh cardigan had the notation:
