"To pick something up" can mean to obtain or acquire. There is no connotation that it's for free. It's a perfectly acceptable use of the phrase.

Its the hard sell to make people order more. Just like when the host say "Order one of those items for me". QVC is not your friend.. they are just trying to make money period!
