Re: Using the word "Stinkin"

[ Edited ]

I am 78, I heard this saying several years back with my grands, who now range in age from 19-36.  I have only heard it the context "that is just so stinkin' cute!" Or, that is just stinkin crazy!  I have used it a couple times, but it doesn't come naturally, seems cuss words do, lol lol

Thanks for the good laugh @chessylady This sent me down a cold, wet Friday evening rabbit hole for the origin. So here goes...

“Badges? We ain’t got no badges! We don’t need no badges! I don’t have to show you any stinking badges!”

-From the 1948 classic film The Treasure of the Sierra Madre starring Humphrey Bogart. The 1927 book by B. Traven inspired the film had a slightly different version.

“Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges!”

-The Monkees TV show 1967, Mickey Dolenz (drummer)

-And, Blazing Saddles film 1974 is the use that popularized those famed words and made it common for people to say “we don’t need no stinking [whatever]” as a joking comment about almost anything.

The Blazing Saddles version is what I remember. Looks like stinking this or that has been around a minute.

Hope this makes you smile or maybe have a fond memory. Have a great weekend! Cheers!

Re: Using the word "Stinkin"

@nwbabs Thanks for the research. I think most of us think of Blazing Saddles.

Re: Using the word "Stinkin"

That was popular a few years ago and seems they have started using it again.  Same as before and all the other popular sayings it will disappear and another will take its place.

Re: Using the word "Stinkin"

It's a thing; but not a Philly thing.  I don't mind the term, but don't use it and don't, personally, know anyone who does.

We Philadelphians use much more colorful language! lol

Re: Using the word "Stinkin"

@mjmm .  Agreed.  Stinking is a Negative word.  I would think they would want to speak positively about everything they are trying to sell.  Me personally, I don't buy it when I hear that word.
