Unfavorable vs objective product reviews

Like many others, I really appreciate the product reviews, good and bad.  I rely on them to help me make a buying decision.

However, I am constantly amazed at reviews that will leave less than favorable feedback, and a low star rating, because 'something did not good on them'.  That's great feedback, but unless the product does not perform or is not as described, it's not fair to leave a poor review, just because you don't like the way something looks ON YOU.

Remarks like, "This does not look good on my full-figured body shape." or "This dress was way too long for a petite person." are great, but don't remove stars because of that.  On the other hand, if the product is presented as 'red' and it's really 'brown', then fire away!!!

What do you all think?

Another thing that amazes me is when someone will find a product to be defective, but, because it's past the 30-day return period, will end up keeping it, and then are frustrated that they spent $$ on something they can't use.  Did you TRY to get a refund or replacement?  I have found the QVC customer service people to be VERY flexible and understanding in this regard.  Remember, 'if you don't ask, the answer is always no.'  What do you have to lose?  A 5-minute phone call might save you a bundle!!

Re: Unfavorable vs objective product reviews

I've always been frustrated at a lot of the reviews, both high and low ratings. I want details: what color did you purchase; WHY exactly did you like or dislike it; how was the quality; how was the sizing compared to the size you typically wear/order; how was the functionality.
Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.

Re: Unfavorable vs objective product reviews

Agree 100%.  I think alot of people just don't know how to write to make a point; either they don't understand the point or they can't get to it.   My "favs" are the ones that criticize a color -- "I didn't like the color", or the "color did not look good on me." Not helpful.

Re: Unfavorable vs objective product reviews

I agree 'this does not look good on me' is not a good reason to deduct stars. I like to see good reviews that truly do help. For example, yesterday on HSN, there was TSV that appealed to me. I put it in my cart and then read the reviews. The well written, informative reviews were so uncomplimentary, that I cancelled. They saved me from a potentially bad purchase.

Re: Unfavorable vs objective product reviews

Sometimes I just have to laugh at what people say about a product.  For instance, I've read a lot of reviews about Temp-tations stoneware.  People will actually give it 4 stars because it was "pretty", but it has a chip or it crazed or cracked, so they're sending it back and will NEVER buy it again, and THEN THEY CHECK OFF THAT THEY WOULD RECOMMEND IT AS A GIFT!

Really???

Re: Unfavorable vs objective product reviews

Lots of times, I'd like to rate the reviews themselves.  Way too many just are not helpful at all, and that's why I use my own sense of a product very often instead o0f reading reviews.

For appliances and electronics, I usually prefer professional reviews to consumer ones.

I agree but am not surprised.  As an eBay seller, I see this ALL the time....  The customers will ding your stars because, despite clear close up pictures, accurate measurements in at least TWO places on the listing, using the word Small or Mini.... they are surprised that the item that came was smaller than they thought.... !!!!

Any personal responsibily??

I hope I'm not ever on their gift lists!      Happy_smiley_face.png

Re: Unfavorable vs objective product reviews

I love the reviews for a tsv that say last year I bought this and it didn't do this or that, etc.  This year's tsv is not the same model.  I read the reviews, but won't take the useless ones into account.

I write a lot of reviews (top 100 reviewer) and try very hard to be objective and include the information I think potential buyers want or need to know. I agree many reviews are no help whatsoever and are poorly written. Many are downright unfair to the product.

Too bad people don't read the guidelines for writing reviews before they launch their careers as review writers. Then they'd know why theirs was rejected.
