Shipping and handling charges

I was watching the competition one day and saw that on their anniversary they had an offer I would love to see on QVC. If you spent $50 or more, S&H was free! I don't understand how you figure S&H. Sometimes you have a great TSV or OTO or whatever and I look at S&H and that usually stops me. Some things I really like seem to have such a high S&H charge. How do you figure?
