@lucymo The old ignore button was flawed, because even if you ignored someone, you would still see that they commented on a post.  It would just say something like, "You've ignored this contributor" instead of seeing the text of their post.  What they need to do is make it like the Block feature on Facebook, where when you block someone, you are invisible to them, and they are invisible to you.  Every time you hit the Reply button, the person to whom you are replying should automatically be invoked (as I've done with you at the beginning of this post), and anyone who you or I have blocked could not even see this post.

Sure it wasn't perfect, but better than nothing.  Even tho I only had a few people on ignore it worked for me.

On our board if you had someone on ignore they couldn't pm you.  Of course that didn't apply to moderators, and you couldn't put one on ignore. Smiley Wink  If this was a major board they would probably need more features.

@debic Since you have experience being a moderator on another site, I'm curious how you got that position?  Is there a criteria for being a moderator?

Re: QVC Moderators, We need the "Ignore User" feature back!

Hello, StillFuntoShop and welcome. Smiley Happy

Sorry, but a while ago when the QVC forum was updated, the moderators said that they weren't able to at this time. Something about this type of forum not allowing them to install it or something.

I imagine every board is different, but for mine I had been an active member for quite a few years.   They nominate people they'd like and vote on it.  It has to be 100%.  So I was invited.  And they say, it will be fun!!!  On some boards the admin just decides who they want in and invites them.  I've assumed here it's already employees that draw the short stick.   Some of it's fun, like the mod forums, but it's really a thankless job.

That's interesting, @debic.  I wonder if the moderators on this board are also contributors.  I imagine it would be a conflict of interest, but considering I've seen biased choices of which posts get removed versus ones that don't, I wouldn't be surprised.  I wish we could go back to the old board where moderators were invisible, and posts being removed didn't include notes from the moderators.  More often than not, it does more to show their inconsistency rather than good judgement.

@PeterDM, What you describe is the ideal.Smiley  It requires more complex software which (evidently) isn't supported by the platform QVC has opted to use.   That's unfortunate for a corporation of their size, right?   But, even so, I like the added features of this forum....  although I don't understand why the moderators are failing to notice "trolling" patterns, failing to give warnings, and then failing to ban posters who continue the offensive practices.  From my experience, that part isn't complicated, and allowing trolling, baiting and flaming to continue actually makes the moderators' job harder.

@PeterDM, They're not allowed to be contributors without their QVC staff badge.   It's generally considered unprofessional for moderators to be contributors, other than administrative activity or company-sanctioned activity.   Also, the position is likely one specifically advertised and recruited as a forum moderator.   A privately-owned (general chat board) forum is much easier to manage since the moderators don't have to represent a business -- in this case, each moderator has to be cognizant of answering to QVC "corporate" more so than to the desires of the posters.

@dooBdoo You have perfectly stated the crux of the problem.  Trolls are allowed to abuse contributors, and when they are called out on it, the defenders get removed, but the trolls' comments remain.  It's bizarre.  I can see that they don't want to lose customers by banning people from the boards, but I'm pretty sure if I walked around any department store hurling insults at other customers, I'd be asked to leave, too.

A block button would give me the power to decide whether or not to interact with these people.  I should be the one to decide who I want to interact with, not the moderators.  I'm a customer here, too.

We all participated just like before we became mods.   We just had Moderator under our names so we could be identified.

Reports played such a big part of moderating, if we thought a reporter was abusing this because of their beliefs or dislike of a member we shut them down.  I'm not sure how they work together, but the more moderators the more conflict, just like posters.   If there were questions about an action, that stuff got discussed privately and it was still up to the moderator to let it go or change the outcome.  One mod doesn't cross the other in public.

I totally agree with you, @PeterDM.    I think the most puzzling thing here is the moderators' lack of attention to trolling, and their lack of action to stop it.   I think they're shooting themselves in the foot by failing to give it a priority --  it creates a negative atmosphere for their posters, customers, readers, and it generates more complaints.   Very odd.
