I was actually thinking of a Fashion thread.  The OP provided a link to another website.  A few of us posted later with other links to that same website.  One person simply posted photos from the link provided in the OP, and her post was deleted.  Our posts were deleted because they were links to another site, yet the OP remained.  I asked the moderator who deleted my post to explain why some posts could contain links to that website while others can't.  That moderator never responded, but another moderator came along and deleted the thread.  Again, we were just posting links to the same website mentioned in the OP, so it seemed like they were deleting posts without even reading the first post that started the thread.

I don't read in that forum, but they've been deleting all outside links in the kitchen forum for awhile now.

I miss OT posts being allowed, some of those turned  out to be the best threads.  I was on one board and they were referred to bunny trails, you never know where they'd go.

I came here after a day of Thanksgiving yesterday to catch up and see what's new.  The "Thanksgiving is unfair to women" post caught my eye.  I can't, for the life of me understand why it was closed down????  Nothing I saw that would have warranted that action.

Just for giggles & grins, I just read through the entire post.

As a moderator, they recognize the 'tone' of the thread.

Post #72...with bold large letters using words like 'slave' & 'complacent' are not conversational in tone.   Then add 'religion'...and that was the word which caused the close down.  It was moving in a direction that was very, very obvious.  ****** it in the bud...especially on a should-be-feel-good day like Thanksgiving.

Re: Moderators should read entire thread before deleting posts

I've also seen similar threads in Kitchen where the OP posts a link, and others post links, but the individual posts get deleted while OP remains.

Currently, there's a gun control thread in Community Chat. Posts are being deleted for being argumentative, but if you think about it, gun control is a controversial and political topic.  Odd how they weed out singular comments when the original post is seemingly a violation of standards.  If they have read the entire thread, they would see there's more going on there than a couple of argumentative posts.

*********  I guess I didn't see the religious post.  To me, sooner or later, all the threads seem to have at least one or two posters come in with "the tone".  I mean it could be about stubbing your toe and "the toners" would be there!

Seriously though.....I don't think those that come in with their overly dramatic tones should ruin it for the rest of us.  It's always the same people saying how ridiculous every one is that can't see it their way. They just have to drive and drive their point home.  Honestly, I think that comes from just wanting to be heard....but gee whiz.....ya gotta know when to stop.  I suggest they run around the block a dozen times before they post.

I'm going to guess that they rely on reports.  I know when I modded we always did.   We also locked down threads we were tired of babysitting, removing specific posts will only last so long.   A lot of posters know dang well what they should not post but do anyway.    Most of those threads do end up getting locked.

@debic

ITA.

Wish there was an algorithm that would automatically ban certain users by using certain criteria:

-) if OP starts a thread which is closed down/blocked

-) if OP contributes to said closed down/blocked thread

This would prevent argumentative members who intentionally start posts with provocative topics...wanting to get a rise from other members.

This could be applied to a member with 10 posts or 10,000 posts.  Ban them for a period of time...or permanently depending on their tenure.

Re: Moderators should read entire thread before deleting posts

This will be deleted because anything that criticizes the moderators is,  but I agree with all the posters.

The moderators are arbitrary, presumptuous and too quick to posit their own opinions. I suspect they are young people who've never held any job with any kind of power before,

Poof! watch their magic at work when they delete this!

Re: Moderators should read entire thread before deleting posts

Hello, wildcat fan. Smiley Happy

I think one of the moderators said that sometimes they do read the whole thread and then only delete the posts that need deleting. Sometimes, the moderators will even temporarily lock the thread, delete some of the posts, then open the thread back up again.

They also said the practice of reading through the whole thread can be rather time-consuming and difficult because the threads can get really long, posters will continue to post in the threads or there are several threads that are really long and people are arguing. But the moderators do read the threads sometimes.

That's the explanation that I saw from a few of the mods.

[ Edited ]

I don't see how anyone can expect the mods to read every post in a thread before taking action on a reported post/thread when it seems the majority of posters don't even read the thread before responding.

Re: Moderators should read entire thread before deleting posts

I think they should at least read the OP because I've seen examples where the OP violated the same standards that were cited when they deleted individual posts.  Again, most threads aren't that long.  They seemingly have the time and manpower.
