Re: Italian Heritage Month

I'm not sure why QVC is celebrating October as Spanish Heritage month.

October has always been considered Italian Heritage Month.

The heritage month is in October to coincide with Columbus Day — the national holiday celebrated on the second Monday of the month. Italian-American Heritage Month celebrates the distinguished cultural contributions of Americans with Italian lineage.

 From the internet:

Columbus Day 2023 in The United States:

Columbus Day, which is on the second Monday of October, celebrates Christopher Columbus' arrival to the Americas on October 12, 1492. This is an important date in many Italian-American communities; it is controversial in some Native American communities.

Is Columbus Day a Public Holiday?

Columbus Day 2023 is a state legal holiday in Tennessee, a state holiday in 22 states, and a federal holiday in 28 states.

Still Columbus Day to me.

It’s absolutely true to celebrate all people. It’s now passe to celebrate Italian-Americans because I guess we assimilated too much. It also being politically correct which I detest.

@amyb  It will always be Columbus Day to me too.  Where I live, it's still a Federal holiday.  The only entity that refers to Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples' Day is the county library.

I don't mind the various heritage months as long as all of them are included.  If you're going to celebrate one, celebrate all of them.

In the states where Columbus Day has been removed and Indigenous Peoples' Day is celebrated, is that considered a Federal holiday and government, schools, and some businesses are closed?

I've chosen to look at it as a plus and will try to learn about the contributions from groups other than the one(s) I belong to.  If you want a day, week or month dedicated to your particular group, then contact your legislators to see what they can do.  Hey, it took a long time for women to be recognized for what they've done for this country and I'm sure there are still some men who don't like that idea.  Kinda the same sentiment being expressed by some people on these boards.  Look beyond your tribe and welcome what others have done for our country rather than suffering from some petty injustices.

In NY some people are always trying to cancel Columbus Day and / or take down our statue of Columbus.   In NY this statue was bought and paid for by proud hardworking Italians who built the skyscrapers and infrastructure in NYC to commemorate the 13 innocent Italians who were lynched in New Orleans.   I always honor those innocents who were murdered for their ethnicity.   At that time Italians were not seen as "white".

I research their story and find out new information each year.

Let's be honest and, at some time, EVERY group of people came here.   The origins of mankind was NOT in North America.   Who came first, second, etc and who built what is just a matter of the time they migrated here.   We all have histories of hardships, slavery, oppression, and triumph and success.

Can we all open our minds and get along?

I may be one of the few but I find "celebrating" a certain heritage, race, gender, etc. is excluding others. I just don't understand a month of honoring or celebrating a certain "person".

We should celebrate every race, gender, religion, etc. every day. No matter what is chosen to celebrate for the month, there are more people being excluded. There is so much diversity that cannot all be celebrated in 12 months.

Anyway, I never pay attention to what month it is and who is being celebrated. We need to embrace everyone in our own way. I think it is just a selling tactic to draw people in that follow this. Again, my opinion only.

@cjm61 I agree 100 percent.  No reason to pick out certain groups.  We are all here, we all came from somewhere else, nobody is original to here.  We every one as special as everyone else.  Otherwise we're just shifting prejudice.

With the exception of the Native Americans.

@spumoni99 Nope.  They came here across the land bridge.  They are like all of us.

@Sooner following that logic, we all originate from mother Africa.

@walkingal So funny you mention the library...I was in my library the other day and they had a sign up telling us they'd be closed Monday: "Closed Oct 9 for Indigenous People's Day/Columbus Day" I thought 🙄, now Columbus must take a step back. My library is very.....pc, woke. Whatever. It's all so exhausting. Back in the day, we always "assimilated" to be Americans, while still celebrating the various cultures that came here too. We even joked about stereotypes with each other and laughed also at our own cultural stereotypes. Among the actual people in my life we all still do.

It was all good. All meant in a good way, not to separate us from being American, just celebrating each culture also.

If anything "they've" divided us more these days. Intentional.

And changing things like "Washington Redskins" to whatever stupid thing they are now. I heard that some chief from a tribe was insulted they took away the name Redskins, which was an honor not a slight, as many things like this were. Often the actual, "supposed" "offended" are the ones that it doesn't bother at all...."bothered" only the polical forces.

Just my thoughts, everyone has a different opinion and everything is contentious lately...not looking to debate it here.

@Jaspersmom Petty injustice is when some groups are favored over others or allowed some things others aren't allowed or favored with.  It hasn't gone anywhere that I can see.
