I live in NJ - why do I have to pay tax on my purchases?

I have been shopping with the Q for a very long time, from the mid 90's. All this time I have paid NJ sales tax on almost everything except clothing. The law in NJ is you are not obligated to charge sales tax on purchases if the company does not have a presence in the state. So why have I been charged taxes by QVC all these years?
