Re: Hosts mispronouncing color names

Shawn K frequently uses words in the wrong context or in an incorrect tense.

Re: Hosts mispronouncing color names

With devices such as Alexa, it's easier to ask and find out how to pronounce a word.

I still have trouble trying to remember how to pronounce the German wine Liebframilch (I know even the spelling is incorrect.).   Also, there are two distinct spellings of that perticular wine.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

Re: Hosts mispronouncing color names

Not many today are literate or have good command of the English language.  I could not believe it.  Even media people say names incorrectly.

eg......name is Pelletier

media said.......Pellentier.

Wow, no wonder why people told me I was a genius!  LOL!!!!

There once was a host named Suzanne, and she repeatedly pronounced voluptuous, as volumptuous. In addition she used it in the wrong context. It happened all the time, and I wondered why on earth the powers that be didn't take her aside and tell her. I was embarrassed for her. The host who can't pronounce anemone, WAS corrected on air, but she keeps saying it anyway.

I've heard people flub this word many times.  It just reminds me to be grateful for well, you get the picture.....LOL!!!

Like Archie Bunker. .......   I guess I misconscrewed it!   We laugh at this show, it's so funny how he flubs words!!

True it is small potatoes but back in my day we could NOT make even small flubs or we got it and I'm sure the others that it bothers had the same cup of tea.

Many of the hosts mispronounce three color words - ochre (they pronounce it like the vegetable - okra), verdigris (the s is silent) and anemone (it’s a flower; the accent is on the 2nd syllable). Can they be corrected? It is truly annoying.

@LisaDeMoines @Please take my comment as well-meaning and not denigrating. Ochre isn't pronounced like okra. It's pronounced like oh-kur. When I checked pronounciation guides online I found that verdigris can be pronounced with the s sound or with the s silenced.

@Mindy D

We Americans are wont to do things like that.  For instance, we use EKG for electrocardiogram but it should be ECG.  What makes us so arrogant that we change the spelling of pronunciation of words?  Who knows but it happened in early Biblical times as well.  The Lord even changed people's names.  ;-)

The LORD changed people's names because He had a special job for them and I mean laying their lives on the line.  He did not change them for the sake of preference.

To me its just another example of lack of preparation on the part of some of the hosts ......... Perhaps instead of thinking up fantasy stories, or all the personal questions for co-hosts/vendors, or personal anecdotes; they could be doing their "homework" for product presentations.....Woman Frustrated Pronouncing words correctly is part of their jobs as a professional shopping channel host.....Comedian, Norm Crosby based his whole act on mispronouncing words and people howled with laughter.... maybe some hosts are trying to "steal" his act...and title, "Master Of Malaprop".😄

@Spurt   Amen to that.  I recall one newish host doing a jewelry show who clearly couldn't pronounce "chalcedony" so she just spelled it.  Now you'd think she might have been bright enough to notice before the show that she had an unfamiliar word and ask another employee (producer?) how to pronounce it or look it up in the dictionary.  I wonder how many of the Q's college grads know dictionaries have pronunciations?  Instead, she made a total fool of herself.  She didn't make probation.

@AuntG    I recall Kenneth J. Lane started that turquois business as a joke then everyone started doing it. I don't remember it being an "edict"  however.  Thank goodness unlike Fri-yah, they wore it out.
