Some of the voices of certain hosts bother me too. There are two in particular that come to mind. But more than that, what really bothers me is the repetitive phrases some of them use. The Lock and Lock woman with the "You know what," phrase over and over and over again - like in almost every sentence - just drives me crazy. Do these people ever go back and listen to themselves?

I can remember in college having to take a couple classes on Voice & Diction. I can't believe they've allowed some with these grating childlike voices to appear as regulars without even being trained in the bare basics of speaking on television. It's more than just a distraction, but a channel changer--which is something the Q should want to avoid at all costs.

I have a sound board and it doesn't seem to help.

I'm becoming a better speed reader due to often relying on closed captioning.
I agree, it's the fry voice which thankfully is somewhat going away and the lilting at the end of a sentence as if it is a question not a statement.
Talking with my 27yr old son the other day and explaining what I thought was annoying, he didn't understand what I was saying it's so ingrained in his culture.

And sometimes You Know What twice or more in one sentence.
It really is quite astounding. Add in David David David and there aren't a lot of words remaining.
Agree, do they ever listen to their tapes? Not only the vendor how about QVC? The producers must be able to block out a lot.

@Priss wrote:Maybe it's my age and ears, but lately some of the hosts' and brand reps' voices are like nails on a chalkboard to me. I do find myself changing the channel quite a bit.
Thinking about it maybe it is somewhat age related. As I mentioned in other part of your post my 27yr old son doesn't understand what I'm talking about when I point out the fry voice, lyrical lilting at end of a sentence like it's a question.
Loud squawking grating voices seem to be the norm for him and his age group.

I totally agree. It's as if the requirement to be hired as a host or brand ambassador is you must scream, talk fast, have a voice that only a mother could love (if even) and laugh nervously every 3 seconds. My remote is always at the ready. Where are the professionals?

I think a very good voice should be the first qualification in a host's position. Instead, it seems not to be a qualification at all. The voice should come before their singing, dancing and laughing skills. ![]()
There are so many bad voices on both the Q & HSN. Usually, I turn the volumn down so low I just barely hear them. Their voices don't sound so bad when it's very very low.
Public speaking teaches to not end on a high note at the end of the sentence. Men don't do it. It's female and makes you sound weak and unsure.
I think the best female voice is lower than higher. Baby voices or CA sounding voices, ugh! Quite a few of them here.

@happilyretiredgirl Thanks for reminding me about the mute button. I just hit it and am playing music on Echo. @fthunt I have a sound bar, and it's helping, but not enough. Maybe I need a better sound bar.
