I know people who work at various retail stores and get the good merchandise as soon as it arrives or they buy things as soon as they are marked down.  When I worked in a hair salon, I never paid to get my hair done and got all my hair products at cost. That saved me a ton of money. 

 

That being said, I think the hosts "fib."  Some hosts will say they aren't allowed to order anything new prior to their show, that it has to be presented to viewers first.  Then you have a host claiming she bought all kinds of new stuff before she came on air to make sure she got it.  It's all a sales tactic.    


 

@Lipstickdiva, that's what really annoys me... there's a level of insincerity that surrounds these requests to producers that such and such a product be ordered for them before it sells out in their size/color. Or the disappointed tone in their voice when the product sold out before they were able to purchase it. It just doesn't add up. 

 

If they are the show host, then it's part of their job description to know something about all 5-7 products they will be presenting in a show. 

 

So if they really can't purchase the product beforehand, then all they have to do is to tell the producer to order it for them as soon as the product is launched. 

 

Alternatively they could have a friend or family member purchase it for them in advance, to make sure they got a particular limited item. Sure, they wouldn't get their employee discount but at least they would be assured of getting their much wanted product.

 

Something just doesn't add up... and I'm less likely to believe the hosts who go on and on about this on a regular basis. From my perspective, it permanently damages their credibility.

I hate when salespeople lie. It seems unethical to me. But it's part of the job description, lol. "Caveat emptor" (let the buyer beware).

I agree as well, it's all part of the sales tactic... and I personally don't care if the vendors give them a mountain of expensive goods... just don't care.  If I'm unable to get what I want from QVC, I'm sure that the item is sold elsewhere.  As a matter of fact, I'm positive it is.....

Lillyann, I agree withyou, when the host starts yelling for someone to call my husband and order this for me I change the channel.

I think it sounds silly when hosts use those kinds of sales tactics.

I've heard it said that if a host uses the cosmetic item on air,it's hers. You will notice, they're always putting lipstick and other products on while selling. 8)

Many high end retail do not permit their employees first choice on sale items. I've heard some of them say they're hiding certain items, by placing them in less obvious places so the customer does not see. The customer should always be first on sale items. Who wants all the  left overs after they've taken the good stuff

So true -  the QVC perks are small compared to what some get,  Ever talk to parents who work at some colleges where their kids get major, major tuition breaks?  A few bottles of Philosophy hardly compare.

 

This is nothing new either.  In the sixties I ended up living a few houses away from a distant cousin who managed the children's department for a major chain.  His daughter had a wardrobe the Kardashians might envy.

 

 


I think more than Q perks, the hosts get most of their gratuities from vendors. It's shameless how some will almost come out and ask for freebies.

@gmkb I don't think the OP has a problem with the hosts getting perks.  It's their flaunting them in front of the viewers - esp. when the viewer can't get an item - that  is really tacky.  And I agree with the OP.
