Re: Week Five of the 2020 NFL Regular Season!!!

The Eagles grabbed another of their former offensive tackles off of waivers in Brett Toth. He's an interesting guy. An Army graduate of West Point with a degree in physics and nuclear engineering. He briefly joined the Eagles towards the very end of training camp last year and the Eagles were hoping to sneak him onto the practice squad after waiving him at the final cutdown. The Cardinals claimed him off waivers though and spoiled that plan. He stayed on the Cards roster all last year then was on their IR list this year before they waived him this past week. The Eagles then claimed him back off waivers.

He's a big kid at 6'-6" and 300 plus pounds, but very smart (important for an o-lineman), he's also strong and agile. His addition makes the return of Jason Peters look even more remote than it already did. The Eagles are currently knee deep in offensive tackles with Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson as the starters. Toth and Jack Driscoll as kids in reserve with Matt Pryor also able to slide out to tackle if need be. There's also Andre Dillard on IR and Prince Tega-Wanogha on the practice squad. (Both guys are likely to be starters in a year or two, or have that potential.) There's some pretty serious depth at offensive tackle there now for the Eagles. If Jason Peters comes back at all, it's likely to be as the right guard replacing Matt Pryor, more than at left tackle.

The Eagles offensive line is getting very young, very quickly thanks to the rash of injuries this year. That also means it's getting very inexpensive. We'll have to see how the kids hold up against the Steelers pass rush this week, but so far, so good. We could see some pretty big names leave the Eagles roster at the end of the season via retirement, trades, or waivers.

Rivera said he has been thinking about this QB move for a while, and the NFC East helped push the decision. Washington is 1-3 and only a half game behind the Eagles. 😁 Rivera wants a QB who is familiar with their system, and one that will give them the best chance to achieve their “short-term goals”

Rivera said this isn’t an indictment on Dwayne Haskins Jr., but also said he didn’t see the growth he needed over the first 4 games. The door is not closed for Haskins, but for now he will sit on the bench and watch as Kyle and Alex are active on gamedays. He admits that it’s not a fair situation for Haskins with new coaches, no OTAs, preseason, and a limited mini-camp. He heard Haskins’ agents complaints about lack of weapons on offense, but Kyle will be stepping in an playing with the same players.

Rivera also mentioned that he has noticed frustration from players when Haskins play has limited the offense, and put more pressure on the defense. The decision is his, but he laid out his plan for team owner Dan Snyder and he was supportive. Offensive Coordinator Scott Turner also agreed with the plan, and is reportedly very high on Kyle Allen.

The best QB on the WFT roster is easily Alex Smith. The guy with the most potential is Dwayne Haskins. The guy most experienced in the system is Kyle Allen. If you're only prioritizing winning right now, the QB to play is either Alex Smith or Kyle Allen. (Probably Alex Smith to be honest.) Alex Smith is a risky play for them as he could get injured again and be done. Kyle Allen is the easy choice, but he has a very low ceiling.

He was benched in his final college year for Kyle Postma. (Who?) He was undrafted. It's not like teams were dying to sign the kid. He was signed as a camp arm and cut by the Panthers before being signed to their practice squad. He was released again and then resigned to the practice squad again. In December 2018 he was finally moved up to the roster after Cam got injured to back up the infamous Taylor Heinicke. He only got a start after Heinicke got injured then he got injured himself and was replaced with the great Garrett Gilbert. In 2019 Allen got the chance to start after Cam got injured again and did okay, but was ultimately benched for rookie Will Grier. (Who?) The Panthers thought so much of him that they unloaded him this year for a fifth round pick in the draft.

Kyle Allen is a very, very low ceiling QB.He couldn't hold the starting job in college. He couldn't hold the starting job in the NFL. He couldn't even keep the backup job with the Panthers. If the WFT want to win now, Alex Smith is the answer. If they want to build for the future, Dwayne Haskins is the guy. Kyle Allen isn't really the answer to anything. He's not a franchise QB and the other two are at least potentially that if healthy and properly prepared. It's the kind of move a team makes out of frustration more than wisdom. It's something of a panic move. It's not the smart move.

The struggles of Haskins and Daniel Jones this year were very easy to forecast when both organizations decided to change offensive systems on their second year QB's. You just kill the kids when you do that. No young QB prospers when the systems around him all change. If you're drafting a kid up high in the draft, you've got to have the support he needs in place and be prepared to ride out the tough times. If you have any doubt about the coaching situation, change the coach before you draft the kid. Don't give the kid one year in a system then tell him to forget all of that and learn this. It just doesn't work. Kid QBs need stability. If you're not prepared to give them that, then don't draft one.

Yep, Kyle's not the best, and as the other analysts have said Alex gives us the best chance to win....but how would your conscience be if Alex got hurt again and experienced another serious injury..... There are other QBs better than Kyle, but Kyle just knows the offense so thats why they went with him....Even Alex didnt get much of a chance to learn it....

I think Rivera just didnt want to discourage other players, particularly the defense seeing the offense not able to put a drive together so the defense was ALWAYS on the field and they just get gassed and burned out....and eventually it could cause finger pointing and a split in the locker room offense vs defense....

Scott Turner could "see the same things happening over and over again" with Dwayne. Coaches will tolerate mistakes, but not repetitive mistakes and opportunities that we didn't capitalize on."

Re: Week Five of the 2020 NFL Regular Season!!!

Most teams have player councils these days where some veteran players meet with the coaches/front office on a regular basis to discuss issues. If there's an issue the coaches can explain it to those players who then can relay things to the rest of the team. It's pretty easy to explain to the veteran players why you're starting Dwayne Haskins. The kid has by far the highest ceiling of anyone they have on the roster. They saw him play towards the end of last season to know what he's capable of.

Have the coaches fall on the sword and take the blame for his level of play if there's fear of division. Doug Pederson accepts blame for every loss. "I should have done better. We'll learn from this and move forward." Wentz can throw three interceptions and fumble the ball twice and Pederson takes the blame. "I should have put him in a better position." Try to find a time when Doug Pederson or one of his coaches blamed a player for a loss. It doesn't happen. Everything is the fault of the coaches. He learned that from Andy Reid and it works. Linebacker Nate Gerry is off to a horrible start this year, often lost in space, but not once has a coach said anything publicly about his play other than praise it. Jim Schwartz was just asked about it this week and praised Gerry to death. (Gerry may get benched this week but Schwartz praised him anyway.)

With Haskins, have the OC and head coach take the blame for his mistakes. That's why they get paid the big bucks. "We asked too much of him on that play. We didn't have him as prepared as we should have. We need to focus the offense more on his strengths. They showed us a look we hadn't prepared him to face. Etc." It doesn't matter if he throws four passes in a row right into the middle linebacker who's standing ten feet in front of him, you don't blame the kid. "It's our fault and we'll fix it going forward."

If you polled the WFT players probably ninety percent or more would say start Alex Smith. They know he's their best QB. If you're going to defy their wishes and start a guy it might as well be Haskins who has the most upside. The risk of injury to Alex Smith is terrifying to the coaching staff. They never want a guy crippled. That's why Chip Kelly benched Kaepernick when he became a vegan and melted away to a skeleton. He wouldn't play him because he was afraid he'd get killed.

When you give up on a Haskins this early, it sends a message to the team that's not necessarily the message you want to send to the team. Players want to know the coaches have their backs. They'll lay it all on the line for a coach who does. Haskins won't get better on the bench as the third string QB. He'll be just watching everything in that role as the starter gets the reps in practice and the backup runs the scout team preparing the defense for the opponent. The third string QB stands around and tries to look busy.

If Haskins is having problems with the offense, simplify it to the point where he doesn't. I don't care if you only run three plays if that's all he can handle, run those three plays and build from there. The offense may not look how the OC wants it to look, but if it works, it works.

The Giants and WFT largely wasted a first-round pick last year in the draft by drafting young QB's then ripping away their coaching staffs and changing their systems. Kid QBs just don't do well in those circumstances. Either live with a bad head coach until the kid's had a chance to grow into the system or flush the head coach first, then draft a kid. If you're going to flush the coach at least replace him with someone running the same system. Both teams killed their kid QBs and have no one to blame but themselves.

Re: Week Five of the 2020 NFL Regular Season!!!

Yet another TItans player has tested positive for Covid-19 making it more likely that the team will be forced to forfeit this week. They can't really push this game back to Monday or Tuesday since the Bills play next Thursday night. The other option, which may make the most sense, is to add an eighteenth week to the schedule for makeup games. Every playoff team not involved in a makeup game then gets a bye week. It might be the best overall solution and buys some breathing room for future issues. As the number of games to play gets smaller and smaller the schedule flexibility gets less and less.

I think the WFT was caught between a rock and a hard place.....Many thought Alex Smith was DONE after that injury....with decent veteran QBs unavailable and since there seemed not enough good young QBs to go around to all the teams that needed one, so with a favorable  draft position they went after who they thought would be the best....but then add a brand new coaching staff and all kinds of changes in the organization and then Covid---just a bad combination of events..... Call it the "Redskin Curse".....They might have to start all over at QB as part of the rebuild and the offense STILL needs a lot of work..Its not like our offense is all set and all the team needs to do is just plug in the right QB......we have a long way to go...perhaps they should have kept AP for veteran leadership too

Re: Week Five of the 2020 NFL Regular Season!!!

Tom Brady's Kryptonite is apparently Nick Foles. Who knew? Nick beat him in a shootout in the Super Bowl. Was clearly in his head during that Pro-Am golf tournament quite a few months ago, and eked out the win last night with a late comeback. Go Nick. That win kept the Bears in sight of the Packers.

And on the subject of QB's, Anthony Lynn of the Chargers has relented and named Justin Herbert his starter for the rest of the season over Tyrod Taylor. He pretty much had to or he'd have lost the team. The kid's played great.

More trouble for the Cowboys as left tackle Tyron Smith has reinjured his neck and is considering sitting out the rest of the season. They lost right tackle La'el Collins already and their backups have not played well. With a lot of really good pass rushers coming up in future weeks Dak Prescott may be running for his life. You always want one side of an o-line to be solid so the QB only really has to sneak a glance one way to see how his protection is holding up. Dak will need his head on a pivot to check each tackle and that can throw off the timing on his passes. The Cowboys are in big trouble.

Some interesting rescheduling going on. The Broncos/Patriots game is now set for Monday at 5PM, and the Titans/Bills game is now on Tuesday at 7PM. The Bills/Chiefs Thursday night game is now set for Sunday to give the Bills some time to recover unless the Titans/Bills game can't be played, then the Thursday night game will be back on the schedule.

Re: Week Five of the 2020 NFL Regular Season!!!

That was a good game. Nick Foles looked better than last Sunday. He still made some interceptions and took sacks, but didn't give up and remained calm throughout the game. I can see why he could drive some coaches crazy. One never knows what to expect when he takes the field.

I'm glad that Foles came back to win. The Colts gave him a hard time, and he deserved a break beating Tom Brady. Woman Very Happy

Brady looked frustrated, and lost his temper on the sidelines. And the penalties! Both teams were the most penalized in the NFL: Tampa #1, Chicago #5.
