Re: Week 10 of the 2020 NFL Regular Season!!!

Not the best game last night. @ Sunshine45 sorry to see that the Ravens lost Boyle for the season, and Calais Campbell is already on IR. There are several issues going on with the team right now.

The weather in NE was bad, and maybe that was a factor. It seems that Lamar Jackson has trouble winning primetime games. I have no idea what is happening with that. Jackson is talented and deserved MVP last year, but  this year he hasn't played well in primetime.

An article stated that Doug Pederson is p####d off and frustrated with the loss Sunday. He is being criticized for his coaching and not being able to fix the problems the Eagles have. I can only imagine what the Philly press is writing.

Patrick Mahomes sent Alex Smith an encouraging message before the game. Smith mentored Mahomes while in KC, and the two stay in contact.

That was a very nice gesture by Patrick Mahomes!

WFT Coach Ron Rivera had nothing but compliments for Alex Smith:

He commented, "Alex Smith played a heck of a football game. He made some excellent throws and he's continuing to get stronger. With Alex Smith on the field, there's an added level of confidence among the offensive players. They believe in him to make plays, and he made a ton today. You have to be on your game with Alex Smith out there. He spreads the ball around. You have to run your route the way you're supposed to because he shares the ball. "

Rivera was asked Monday whether the team had its franchise quarterback in Smith.

“Well, possibly,” Rivera said. “You have to look at how much longer can he play? How much does he want to play?” Smith has completed 71.3 of his passes for 715 yards, averaged 8.22 yards per attempt and completed nine passes for 20-plus yards. It marks the first time in his career that Smith has thrown for 300 or more yards in back-to-back games. “He’s proved that he’s back as a player,” Rivera said. Smith said two weeks ago that he would wait until the offseason to decide his future.

So proud of my guy, Kyler, and his "Hail Murray" pass to the incredible Hopkins.  Catching that ball with 3 defenders on him made for an amazing finish to a great game.  All of those critics out there who said Kyler was too short to make it in the pros are eating their words.  When you're that fast on your feet and have that incredible arm strength, it more than makes up for a few inches.

Re: Week 10 of the 2020 NFL Regular Season!!!

The Philly market is more than a bit brutal when it comes to head coaches and Doug's squarely on the hot seat these days. The play calling seems to lack much rhyme or reason. Doug got Carson moving out of the pocket on two plays and we picked up 40 yards and built some momentum, then they plopped him back in the pocket for the rest of the game. We'll snap off some good runs and build momentum running the ball then call five passes in a row. If it works, great, but when it doesn't work, and it hasn't been working much this year, it drives you a bit crazy.

There are times when as a play-caller you outsmart yourself. Doug is kind of in one of those ruts. If you're gaining six yards a run, keep running until they stop you. It's not rocket science. If they've got a bad corner, attack him. Put your best receiver on him and take your shots. There are times your best bet is to just man up with the opponent and beat them. You don't always have to try and fool them. If you're better than them, then just beat them.

Every defense has a weakness. The Giants were using a bend don't break, zone style of defense. They wanted to keep everything in front of them. Don't let them. You've got Reagor, Hightower, and Fulgham as three deep threats. They're telling you they don't want you throwing the ball deep by the defense they're playing. Why don't they want you throwing the ball deep? Because they know that's their weakness. When you see that it should be bombs away. If nothing else you stretch out the zones and give your underneath receivers more room to work. More often than not Doug had Reagor doing a loop behind Wentz at the snap. When he's ten yards behind the quarterback at the snap, he's not going to be a deep threat. It'll take him nearly a full second to get back to the line of scrimmage before he can even get down the field.

If they're playing a two-deep zone, then run the ball on them. Force them to bring a safety up to help stop the run then run two verticals down the field and whichever way the safety doesn't go, throw the ball that way. If you've got Reagor on one side and Fulgham, or Hightower on the other and both are running vertical routes, the safety can't stay in the middle. Use Wentz to look the safety to one side or the other and then throw the ball to wherever the safety isn't. The fastest Giant DB is Jabril Peppers and he runs a 4.4 forty. Reagor and Hightower are 4.2-4.3 guys. When you've got two receivers who are a tenth faster than the fastest DB on the other team, you attack them. It's not rocket science. The Eagles did that last year against the then Redskins and we didn't have as much speed then. We ran two verticals against their single safety and the guy had to pick a side. When he did we threw the ball to the other side for a long TD.

Doug is just not hitting it with the play calling now. He's out of his rhythm. The team isn't helping him a lot. Kelce had about ten snaps in yesterday's game where he bounced the snap off of his own thigh sending the snap off in an odd direction. That can happen once in a game but then you've got to adjust. Widen your stance. Focus on snapping the ball cleanly. Don't keep repeating the same stupid mistake. Carson was having to watch every snap to try and figure out where it would be. That kills you in the shotgun. The offensive guards were pretty awful yesterday also. At least in pass protection. They were okay on run plays. So, run the ball more. Nope.

On one play the guards and Kelce just whiffed on Leonard Wiliams and little old 5'-6" Boston Scott had to pick him up. Luckily for Carson Boston's a force at blocking and he was able to save Carson's hide, but they just can't do stuff like that. You're going to get your QB killed if you do that too much.

Yesterday's game should have been a confidence builder. You were coming off a bye. Relatively healthy for once. Playing a team you almost never lose to. They were more beat up than us for once. And the Eagles came out flat, stayed flat, and never looked like they'd win the game. It's become the norm in the post-bye week for Doug's teams. We're 1-4 after the bye. We come out of the bye flat, lethargic, and not ready to play football. As a fan, it drives you a bit crazy. Especially when in the Andy Reid era we almost never lost after a bye. It's just really annoying.

On to Cleveland this week and this may be the most winnable game in the immediate future. A good solid performance in this game would help us down the road, but I'm not sure this team is capable of that. There's something missing in this year's team. They need more energy. They need to be having fun playing the game. They need to make it fun to watch them play. It's not fun now.

Re: Week 10 of the 2020 NFL Regular Season!!!

Drew Brees has multiple broken ribs and lung damage from his injury yesterday. The Saints aren't putting him on IR as he'd have to miss three weeks. Uh, guys? Multiple broken ribs and lung damage is more than a three week injury. Optimistically you might be looking at four weeks, realistically you're looking at six to eight, maybe more. Put him on IR. You really don't want him rushing back from that kind of an injury. Ribs are kind of important. They keep those things in the upper body like lungs and the heart from getting squished. An already broken rib can become a spear poking a hole in the lungs/heart and that's not good.

Re: Week 10 of the 2020 NFL Regular Season!!!

Why aren't they putting Brees on IR? Jameis Winston is the back up, and could take over. They also have Taysom Hill, who could QB if necessary. Brees will be out more than three weeks.

Teddy Bridgewater was also injured and might be out awhile. The Panthers have PJ Walker, formerly of the Colts and XFL Houston Roughnecks. He had the most passing yards while playing in the XFL.

Re: Week 10 of the 2020 NFL Regular Season!!!

@teganslaw

I don't get it. Brees should be out a minimum of four to six weeks and eight to twelve wouldn't shock me. They seem to have the attitude of, "Oh, he'll be fine. Why a bit of tape and a bit of a numbing agent and he could play next week." Uh, no. Not if they have a sane medical staff. Now broken ribs aren't always terribly dangerous, depending on where and how they're broken, but they're not a two to three-week injury. He'll be out a good four to six weeks and possibly longer. Put him on IR, free up the roster spot, and go forward.

It could be contract related. He's got a somewhat complicated two-year $50 million deal with two voidable years in 2022 and 2023. It's possible one or more of those voidable years become guaranteed if he's injured and can't pass a physical at a certain point. (Typically around the start of the new league year, though possibly the end of this season.) If they're worried about that, then that could explain not putting him on IR and keeping him on the roster. We'll have to see what happens.

Brees is getting a second opinion.....

Saints quarterback Drew Brees‘ scans are being sent to medical specialists for second opinions to determine the full extent of his chest injuries, Ed Werder of ESPN reports.  The additional opinions will help determine whether the Saints will place Brees on injured reserve. That would entail him missing at least three games.

So even though Brees said on Instagram he would return “in no time,” it appears he is going to miss more time than he or the Saints had hoped.

Re: Week 10 of the 2020 NFL Regular Season!!!

He should be on IR. Multiple broken ribs and a lung injury (one report said a collapsed lung) are not a one or two-week injury. He'll be out 4-6 weeks and possibly 8-12 weeks. Those aren't injuries you can just brush off. Now there are "broken" ribs that are broken in certain places and aren't "loose" for lack of a better word, where they can cause further injury and a guy can play with them as long as he can manage the pain. Since Brees already had a lung injury from the ribs, his broken ribs are most likely not that kind of a broken rib.

On a related note, Bill Parcells used to test his guys with rib injuries by sneaking up behind them and bearhugging them and lifting them off the ground. If they didn't scream when he did that he figured they were good to go. It's a crude but effective way to measure how much pain a guy's in. The players will lie to your face and insist they're fine, so Bill developed his own method to see if they were telling him the truth or not.
