Something similar happened to the son of my of my best friends about 10 yrs ago.  J was riding his bike on their cul-de-sac and a neighbor backed out of his driveway w/o looking and struck J, pinning him under the SUV.  J was airlifted to shock trauma and one of the doctors said if he hadn't been wearing his bike helmet, he probably wouldn't have survived.

Needless to say, the medical bills were well into 6 figures; fortunately most of the expenses were covered.  Their medical insurance company then went after the neighbor to recoup $$$, debating whether the incident would be covered by auto vs. homeowners vs. umbrella liability policy.  Meanwhile, my friend didn't want to settle until there was a better idea of what J's future needs will be so $$ could be set aside for that.  And obviously my friend is not on speaking terms w/neighbor any more.
