Sumo Wrestling - The March (Spring) Tournament 2023

@qbetzforreal , @KBEANS , @Flatbush , and other Sumo fans:

March 12 - 26, 2023 in Osaka

Terunofuji is still recovering from his knee surgery, so he won't participate.

Tobizaru (my favorite) and Daieisho (my least favorite) both were promoted in the rankings.

Tochinoshin (one of my favorites, one of the foreign wrestlers and former champions) was demoted to Juryo because of the shoulder injury he suffered in January.

Kotoshoho, who won the Fighting Spirit award, also moved up.

Will Takakeisho repeat??  Smiley Happy

Re: Sumo Wrestling - The March (Spring) Tournament 2023

@beach-mom- I watched the preview on NHK last night.

The commentators did say the Terunofuji was trying to come back for the March tournament but they felt he show wait until May.  They showed him working out.  He has braces on both knees.

They thought Takakeisho might make it to Yokozuna.  Also, Kiribayama and Hoshoryu might give a run for his money.

Looks like Ichinojo is out this March. He had surgery in February.

@qbetzforreal - Kiribayama and Hoshoryu - I had forgotten about them! You're right, they could be trouble for Takakeisho!

I'm disappointed about Ichinojo. Maybe by June everyone will be healed.

Anyway, this is one of the tournaments I'm really looking forward to!  Smiley Happy

@beach-mom- Another favorite of mine is Takayasu.  He did very well during the tournament.  I hope he moves up.

The Ozeki, Takakeisho is out for the rest of the tournament due to a knee injury.

He may be back in May.

@qbetzforreal - YES!  I just finished watching.

Spoiler
You may remember I'm not a fan of Daieisho. I still say he pulled Meisei's topknot to win in 2021. DH says maybe he didn't grab it, and obviously the judges thought he didn't, but it looked to me like he got away with it! So now, after a mono-ii, he lost.

After reading more about him I learned he went right into sumo after high school to help his mom, a single parent. So my dislike of him has changed!

Tobizaru - next tournament. You can do better!

Nice that Kinbozan, from Kazakhstan, did so well for a rookie in his first basho in the top division
