Re: NFL News for May 2018!!

[ Edited ]

@yellowBeetle @gardenman

Weighing in on the Dak upcoming season and future contract, I think the Cowboys made a HUGE mistake in putting it out in the media what their plans are for Dak.  That's just going to give Dak's agent something to work with.........So Jerry Jones promised "an extraordinary contract". Stephen Jones said he's going to get paid as he deserves, and he just wants Dak to be league MVP.....we'll see Stephen, that's not shooting for high expectations is it??? But don't get your hopes up too high.

If Zeke can stay out of trouble that should help, but there  has been some changes to their O line....and with Witten gone...there goes another option....I agree he didnt seem to connect well with Dez, or maybe it was Dez that didnt connect well with Dak.  Let's see if Dak can connect with new WRs....Dak has problems throwing deep........

And I agree @yellowBeetle Dak does seem like one of the good guys on and off the field.............

With all this talk-----it seems to me that Jerrah and Stephen haven't learned a darn thing from Bruce Allen's fiasco with Kirk Cousins....don't give the agents an edge going into a contract season!!!!

Here are some funny responses from NFL fans after an article was posted on the topic----Fans were speculating on paying Dak what he deserves---

*********************************************************

Sounds good to us Jerr

Signed,
NFC East

*******************************************************

$15/hour?

********************************************************

How much does a QB who doesn’t throw deep and is only as good as the running game makes him out to be deserve?

ask Jacksonville, Denver, cleveland and the Jets;

************************************************************

Let’s be honest… At some point in our lives, we’ve golfed, had a few too many beers and said stupid stuff,of course we weren’t running a billion dollar corporation.

***********************************************************

Playoffs wins:

Tebow – 1
Prescott – 0

****************************************************************

an “extraorindary contract” pending for a mediocre qb. how very cowboy of you.

*****************************************************************

So you figure out what the 20-25th best QBs in the league are getting and you pay him that. Easy.

******************************************************************

A pay cut?

****************************************************************

Love you Jerry, but please shut up.

*******************************************************************

Jerrys been drinking again

*************************************************************

What’s the going rate for a quarterback who plays his best ball handing off to the runningback?

**************************************************************

David Carr>Dak Google it.

***************************************************************

Two words, No Witten

*************************************************************

Well they do have that guy behind him pushing him… oh wait.

********************************************************************

I expect Dallas to be very good this year except for their HC who cannot stop clapping and chewing gum. Eagle fan.

******************************************************************

Too bad he’s got an unimaginative, inflexible OC but it’s still up to Dak with the hot reads. I wish him all the best.

  • Well my Redskins started off with a bang----Guard Arie Kouandjio  tore his quad, looks like he's out for the season......He was drafted in the 4th round in 2015, he was cut before the start of training camp, because of all the injuries to the O-line in 2017 he was pilfered from the Ravens practice squad and started the final 6 games of the 2017 season for the Redskins...........

The standouts in camp---

RB Guice--He ran smoothly, of course there was no blocking and tackling. Guice was the first one in line for every running back drill. Gruden noted that he also was the first one in the meeting room with is playbook open. If he is at all productive he will quickly become a fan favorite.

DL Payne going through drills his footwork was solid, his lateral movement was very quick, he looked very light on his feet for such a big man, and his hand technique was nearly perfect. A solid 310-315 pounds. It'll help the Redskins front.

WR-Trey Quinn-good route runner, he can accelerate at top speed and can stop on a dime. Good effort.

Safety Troy Apke had issues in coverage but made it up with great speed.........

OT Gerod Christian -he needs to work on both upper and lower body strength. Another tackle, Cameron Jefferson, who spent time on the Redskins practice squad did well.

The Eagles first day of rookie camp went pretty well. The media is still in awe of how big and athletic Jordan Mailata is when seen in person. We had two offensive line coaches working with him today. The Eagles really want the kid to succeed. He's going to get a legitimate chance to impress.

Dallas Goedert had a few drops which is rare for him, but nerves were high today. He should settle down. Josh Adams, the Notre Dame running back was largely an observer due to a stress fracture in his foot. They expect him to be ready for training camp. The little corner from Pitt, Avonte Maddox, was running circles around everyone. He's impressively quick.

It looks like Doug Pederson has pulled in the reins and expectations of when Wentz would be ready.....His response is "he will be ready, when he's ready, and when we feel he's ready"..........He wouldnt even speculate if he would be ready for the start of the season....Although Wentz has made great progress he's only been cleared for rehab work and throwing the football.......

Wentz needs to remember what happened to RGIII who came back to early....Most medical experts says it takes a good year to heal............

Nashville is the leading contender for the next draft....

I have been reading speculation too that Wentz possibly will not be ready until at least early October ... and many are saying that it takes a good year to recover from what he sustained. There is absolutely no reason for him to rush back as did RG lll. I know he is eager to get back out there and that is very understandable. But the coaches need to be careful.

Wentz is not a pocket passer by nature ... he is very, very good at it, but his inclination and tendency is often to zig and zag and run with the ball. Now that he has to wear the brace, he obviously will not be as agile and quick as before ... and he could get hurt if he continues with the same type of plays. Many are saying that he must change his mobile style ... but in interviews he is saying he will not. I think he will agree with the consensus of opinion that says he will need to modify the way he plays ... and again, he is a great QB in the pocket! He just has to fight against his inclination to move around so much, darting in and out, and taking off running, etc. And he has to think long term and not let his eagerness to play put him out there too soon.

Everything I've seen indicates that Carson Wentz is on, or ahead of schedule. He's now running, which is a big milestone. Will he be a hundred percent normal? No. You're never one hundred percent normal after a major injury like that. You have a new normal however. Healing time from the surgery is about six weeks. From that point on it's all about regaining range of motion and strength. That can take anywhere from four months after surgery to twelve months or more. From what I'm seeing, Wentz is at least on schedule, and likely ahead of schedule.

As for the knee brace, these aren't the clunky knee braces of years past. Modern knee braces are made of carbon fiber and other extremely strong, but lightweight materials, and are custom made for each player. They can cost ten thousand dollars or more. They are made to allow the player to move and play as before, only with additional support. Lots and lots of players play with knee braces at every level of football.

What Doug Pederson said is basically what he's always said about injured players. The Eagles are generally pretty conservative bringing guys back, but I've seen nothing indicating Wentz won't be ready by September. We're still almost four months from the first real game and about five months post-op. Carson's running, throwing, visiting Haiti, hunting, and going about his normal life. It'll be about nine months after the surgery come September and he'll have been running for four months. Barring a setback, I don't see any reason he can't play at a high level starting week one.

The Eagles certainly have enough quarterbacks floating around to let Wentz take his time recovering. With Foles, Sudfeld and Joe Callahan, the Eagles have three backups who have played in the NFL. We've got three more kids in rookie tryouts, at least one of whom (TCU's Kenny Hill perhaps) will likely get signed for camp.

The general belief is that Wentz and Foles won't see the field in preseason games. Both will be kept shelved until the regular season and Sudfeld and Callahan will get the preseason snaps. I expect to see Wentz participating in camp though.

More thoughts on Carson Wentz...

After watching our local ABC affiliate here in Philly, the takeaway is that the operative word is "patience" as to Wentz' return. The lead sportscaster opened his segment last night saying how in interviews Wentz always says his goal is to return in week one but that Doug Pederson does not have a timetable, but rather a mantra....patience. He then showed a clip of Pederson saying  that he was not going to rush this...that he was not going to rush Wentz out there. Pederson also said he does not want to expose Wentz and that he'll be ready when he's ready and when the coaches feel he is ready. He said they are encouraged with the recovery of Wentz and Jason Peters and Darren Sproles and love their enthusiasm, but he said in each individual case he is not going to risk any other further injury.

Wentz is making great progress for someone who suffered both an ACL and LCL injury. It was very severe...much more severe than first thought. It seems that Pederson is expressing what many are thinking....don't rush it! When many say it takes a full year to recover from something like this, why needlessly expose Wentz too soon?

Speaking of Darren Sproles, there's a video out of him standing on his injured leg aobut a foot in the air on a stopped treadmill. He jumps off the treadmill, lands on just his injured leg, crouches and hops up onto a platform that looks about 30-32 inches high using just the injured leg. I'm pretty sure no therapist or surgeon recommended that for this stage of recovery from a torn ACL, but it shows you how good the repairs can be these days. He's clearly gotten back his strength and range of motion.

Jason Peter's torn ACL was almost good enough for him to return to the field (at least in his mind) for the Super Bowl. He's been running and moving very well since the end of December.

JJ Watt and DeShaun Watson have both been training hard after their torn ACL's.

Modern techniques and modern rehab with dedicated athletes and medical professionals have made potentially career ending injuries into little more than hiccups these days. A surpisingly high number of picks in the draft had ACL injuries repaired in high school or college. Nick Chubb, the 35th overall pick reportedly tore every ligament in his knee but the ACL in 2015 when his knee bent backwards on a play. Josh Sweat the Eagles fourth round pick both tore his ACL and dislocated his knee in high school. It was feared he'd lose the leg, but the artery was miraculously undamaged. He played every game in college starting as a freshman.

I'm pretty sure Wentz will be fine when he takes the field. The Eagles can afford to be patient with him, but I don't think that patience may be necessary. Holding him back may be their biggest challenge.

@gardenman

Your last thought above is spot on, lol....holding Wentz back may be the biggest challenge!

Everyone wants Wentz back out there as soon as possible ... and everyone wants Wentz to be the face of the Eagles for years to come!

And Pederson knows that. But he also knows that patience is the key. And he and the other coaches have to temper Wentz' obvious and understandable desire to get back out there with the realization that he may not be physically ready in September. Emotionally and psychologically Wentz would like to play today! But if he has not had enough time to fully recover physically by the start of the season then Pederson knows it is incumbent upon him to not let Wentz return....no matter how much he wants to.

There is no doubt that Wentz will be as good as ever after going through a full recovery period because he is a great pocket passer and he will learn to make the necessary adjustments in his playing style. But to put him out there before he has had the necessary full recovery period would be malpractice.

Of course if Wentz is fully recovered after nine months and can start in September, that will be terrific. But if he needs a month or two or three more to be fully ready then what is the harm? He has years and years of play ahead with the Eagles. I think Pederson and the other coaches just want to be sure that Wentz is ready. Their decision will be based on what is best for the long-term. If he is really ready week one, fantastic! But if he needs a bit more time, then Pederson is simply saying that he will not risk putting Wentz out there too soon.

As a general rule, the problem with players coming back from an ACL or other injury is more psychological than physical. The injury typically heals pretty quickly, often in six to eight weeks, then it's getting back the strength and range of motion. Once they have the strength and range of motion, they have to then develop confidence in the repair. That can be the hard part. That pretty much has to come from use.

Carson has an advantage in having Sproles and Peters also both with ACL injuries. They can all compare notes among themselves and with the other players with similar injury histories. Nine months is a nice recovery time for that type of injury.
