Re: NFL News and Notes for February 2025!!!

All the mock drafts I've seen have Abdul Carter drafted in the first 5 picks. There seems to be little chance that he would go the Eagles. Some pick Carter as #1; another one chooses Cam Ward #1.

Travis Hunter is up there, but it's unclear if he would be WR or CB. Maybe it depends on what team picks him and their needs.

A couple drafts have the Colts taking TE Tyler Warren (Penn State.) They have defensive needs, but I would like the Warren signing.

I used to think Micah Parsons was smart until I read this statement....

YES, the Cowboys need to make moves, but Micah if you want that you better move on to another team, the Cowboys have lots of holes in the roster, no room under the cap to help them wheel and deal they are actually ($2,848,056) over the cap, and Jerry Jones is your GM!

Re: NFL News and Notes for February 2025!!!

It would take something of a miracle for Abdul Carter to fall to the Eagles or for the Eagles to get up to him. He's the best player in the draft. It would be amazing if Howie could pull it off, but the odds are pretty slim.

Tyler Warren will be a great NFL tight end. He's possibly the third best player in the draft but teams tend not to draft tight ends high. Whoever gets him will be very happy they took him. He's more of a football player than an athlete, so he could slide a bit.

The Cowboys are just in a bad place. A lot of roster holes with no good way to fix them. Players get frustrated watching the front office not get them help. Then you look around at your rivals getting stronger and it hurts. "How are we supposed to compete with them?"

I think the Cowboys are destined to live in the mid-tier range for a bit. A four win floor and maybe a nine to ten win ceiling. Seven or eight wins seem to be the norm for them. They're just in a bad spot. Micah, CeeDee, and Dak will all get frustrated with the process.

Re: NFL News and Notes for February 2025!!!

As expected, the Eagles signed nearly all of their practice squad guys to futures deals, so they'll be around for the OTAs and training camp. That's the first step in building the 2025 roster. Step two will be re-signing any current Eagles free agents to new deals before free agency.

Zack Baun might get re-signed. His estimated value is around $10 million per year. The length of the deal is interesting as he's already 28 years old. He's not a kid and he's had one good season in the pros. Linebackers tend not to age well. It's a very physical position to play. A two or three-year deal? If he was a bit younger a four or five-year deal would be ideal.

Josh Sweat will probably be going. His estimated future deal is in the $20+ million per year range. That's pretty pricey. Nolan Smith Jr, Bryce Huff, and Jalyx Hunt are already there to take over and Brandon Graham sounded like he's coming back, so that's four good edge rushers. They'll likely add a kid or two in the draft also.

Mekhi Becton is iffy. He's estimated to bring in about $15 million a year as a guard in free agency. If a team thinks they can convert him back to tackle that might move up to the $20+ million range. He's largely been on both extremes in the NFL, first with the highly dysfunctional Jets and then with the highly functional Eagles. He's said this is the most fun he's had and the happiest he's been since high school. He strikes me as a guy who may take less to stay with the Eagles where he feels at home.

Milton Williams may find his market limited due to the number of kid defensive tackles in the draft. I think 41 were invited to the Combine this year. It's not an especially good draft, except for the defensive tackle position where the talent level is quite high this year. If you can draft a kid and have him on a cheap contract, do you pay more for a vet? Ideally, you want to reach free agency in a bad draft year for your position.

I would expect some team to poach Fred Johnson from the Eagles. he's been a very good starter at offensive tackle when called upon. He could start at the left or right for about half the teams in the league and be an upgrade over what they have now.

No official word on the OC search just yet, but I'm sure lots of stuff has gone on behind the scenes. They'll likely get that resolved before the Combine, which is coming up soon. The NFL off-season goes by fast when you make the Super Bowl. The Combine is coming up soon and then free agency right behind it. Turn around a couple of times and it'll be the NFL draft.

Not a good draft for offensive linemen, so Adam Peters could be looking to poach a couple of Eagles.....

That G Mekhi Becton is a HUGE DUDE.....6'7" 364 lbs.... Mailata is urging and begging Howie to resign him...But with multiple free agents needing resigning Howie will have to make some tough decisions.......Perhaps Becton will need to make a choice between money$$$ or playing where he's happy....Patriots are said to be a landing spot, Washington could sure use him...

Washington could also use OT Fred Johnson........But its not too good of an idea to do too much business with a Division rival

Early mocks have Washington looking at :

Colston Loveland, TE Michigan

Mason Taylor, TE LSU

D.J. Giddens, RB Kansas State

Jared Ivey,  Edge Mississippi

Tez Johnson, WR Oregon

Josh Conerly Jr. OT Oregon

As of February 12, 2025, Washington had seven draft picks and the third-most cap space in the NFL.

Re: NFL News and Notes for February 2025!!!

The Dolphins released RB Raheem Mostert. He lost the starter position to De'von Achane and also was dealing with some injuries. I don't know what the price would be if another team was interested.

PFF projects the Colts to be a landing spot for Saints TE Juwan Johnson, now a free agent. I would be fine with the Colts getting him. Johnson was a solid player and had some good games.

Yeah, Mekhi Becton is a mountain of a man. Everyone in the league had a chance to sign him, but no one did. Except for Howie. Jeff Stoutland likes offensive lineman who are "different." Bigger, faster, smarter, nastier, or something. Becton falls into the bigger category. If he reaches free agency, a lot of teams will be interested in him. I'm not sure how he'll do elsewhere.

Re: NFL News and Notes for February 2025!!!

Only 51 weeks until next year's Super Bowl!

On Tuesday teams can start to apply franchise tags on guys they don't want to lose. I'm not sure we'll see any tags used this year. Maybe Tee Higgins? Tagging him twice in a row gets kind of pricey though. It would be better to work out a new deal with him than tag him. He's expected to get somewhere between $32 million and $35 million per year in free agency, so that's kind of the floor and ceiling for a new deal. If you're not willing to pay him at least $32 million, you're probably better off letting him go. His tag price is reportedly $26+ million, but he won't be happy being tagged two years in a row. Unhappy guys tend not to play as well as happy guys. Tag and trade is always an option too. Maybe their best option if they don't want to pay him.

A week from tomorrow the Combine kicks off. Expect lots of trade talk to take place since every team and team executive will be there. Cleveland will get lots of visits from other teams inquiring into Myles Garrett. They still insist he's not for sale, but that may be more for their fans' consumption than other teams. I suspect they'll work with Garrett to find him a new team that works for both the Browns and Garrett. The Browns will want draft picks/maybe players while also getting Garrett someplace he's happy.

Possible landing spots for Garrett are Philly, LA Rams, Cowboys, Commanders, Bills, Lions, Vikings, etc. There's some speculation that the Browns may try to package DeShaun Watson and Myles Garrett to get Watson's contract off their hands. "If you're taking our best player, we're going to make you take our worst one too!" That could be a deal breaker for a lot of teams.

March tenth (three weeks from tomorrow) the "legal tampering" period for free agents kicks off. Lots of semi-legal tampering has already taken place though. Agents use players already on teams to chat with their GM to see if that GM has any interest in a pending free agent. "Yo! Howie! What do you think about Higgins? I hear he might want to come here." I can't talk about a player who's not on the team. He's a special talent though. "So, what could a guy like that get in a deal?" Hypothetically, he could get a three-year $100 million deal without much trouble.

Agents will have more direct contact with teams at the Combine as they represent the kids at the Combine and more semi-legal tampering will take place.

It looks like Jerry Jones largely lost the war over the size of the Cowboys coaching staff. They still have eleven offensive coaches (same as last year.) Nine defensive coaches (same as last year). But just two special teams coaches, shedding one from last year. And they've also shed one strength and conditioning coach. I'm pretty sure JJ wanted to cut the staff by a lot more than just two guys.

Things are very quiet on the Eagles coaching changes. I suspect a lot's going on behind the scenes, but nothing has leaked out just yet. The easy option is to promote Kevin Patullo to the OC role. Doug Pederson, Frank Reich, and many others are also options. I would expect that to be filled by the coming weekend. They may have already filled it. We didn't learn the whole coaching staff last year until the OTAs started. The Eagles like to keep coaching stuff quiet. They may already have a new OC hard at work and we just don't know it.

Lots of players are getting cut loose as they don't fit into a team's plans going forward. The Dolphins led the way cutting three former starters. Other teams will be joining them soon. Roster bonuses typically kick in around the start of the new league year, so if you don't have plans for a guy, cut him before he gets his bonus. You'll see more cuts before too long.

@PARedbird

O/T-

Who would've thought our Spurs would become the center of controversy at the NBA ALL STAR SATURDAY NIGHT SKILLS CHALLENGE.....Of course, this was all Chris Paul's idea, his partner Wemby just went along this being his first All Star Weekend...It did not take long for NBA All-Star Saturday Night to add some spice as the two Spurs were quickly disqualified.

Chris Paul and Victor Wembanyama represented San Antonio in the NBA Skills Challenge and tried a unique strategy to circumvent the rules. Rather than attempt any shots, the two players instead focused on the other aspects of the drill and the time element.

It was a fascinating decision by the players, but unfortunately for Paul and Wemby, it was not legal. As boos reigned down from the crowd in San Francisco, they soon learned that they were not allowed to use this strategy.  An official even brought a copy of the rules for Chris Paul to read ....lol

Donovan Mitchell, who ended up winning the contest alongside Cleveland teammate Evan Mobley, said it was smart. “If they weren’t disqualified, I think we probably would have just did the same thing to be honest with you,” Mitchell said. “Play to win.”

On a happier note...the Spur's Stephon Castle was awarded the MVP trophy 🏆 in the RISING STARS GAME......

Stephon was also the runner up in the Slam Dunk Competition....the winner used props...smh!

Wemby will participate in the All Star Game on Sunday, he is on Charles's Barkley's team....
