Re: NFL News and Notes for August 2022!!!

The Bears do some interesting stuff. Roquan Smith is a very talented football player and guys like him aren't all that easy to find. When you find one, you keep him and reward him. You do what it takes to make him happy. He's one of those foundational pieces you build a team around.

There's a lot of chatter about a possible Jalen Reagor trade out of Philly. Rumored landing spots are the Bears and Broncos. He's had a very good, very consistent camp but he's still WR 5 (at best) with the Eagles. He's got AJ Brown and Devonte Smith as WR 1 and 2. Quez Watkins has locked down WR 3, and Zach Pascal seems locked in at WR 4. Some of the kids are fighting for WR 5 and 6 (if the Eagles carry six) with Britain Covey (also punt returner) impressing in camp and even getting some reps with the first team. Deon Cain has had a good camp also. Greg Ward is the wily vet who's hard to cover and John Hightower is also in the running.

The backup QB spot for the Eagles will be interesting to watch over the preseason games. Gardner Minshew hasn't had a good camp. Reid Sinnett has had a very good camp. Carson Strong looks more like a long-term project who will end up on the practice squad. Based on practices alone, Reid Sinnett has likely earned the backup role. Minshew is more of a game QB than a practice QB. He's likely to reassert himself in the preseason games and keep the backup spot. He's at his best when the competitive juices get flowing, but as of now, Sinnett has played better in practice.

Areas where the Eagles were thought to be weak (linebacker and safety) are looking more like strengths right now. The linebacker group has impressed everyone. TJ Edwards has been exceptional in camp. Kyzir White has been great also. They're apt to be the starters. Davion Taylor and Shaun Bradley have reportedly looked very good also. Nakobe Dean has been okay. He hasn't flashed but he also hasn't done anything glaringly wrong. Officially, Haasson Reddick is a linebacker, but he'll be more of a DE and has also looked very good.

Everyone had penciled in Jaquiski Tartt as a starter at safety after he signed with the Eagles, but Marcus Epps and Anthony Harris seem to be the starting pair so far. Andre Chachere and Josiah Scott have made lots of plays also.

This is kind of where you want to be at this point of the preseason. Solid starters everywhere and good depth at every position. There's no "need" to go out and get someone. If someone falls into your lap, then great. A big running back might still be a need going forward, but Jordan Howard is still out there and available. (He's been worked out by the Saints and Steelers, but not signed. At least not yet.)

KC Chiefs training camp yesterday: Mahomes threw a behind-the-back pass and hit the goalpost, then threw another pass with his left hand and hit the goalpost Both were I think from about 30 yds. I hope he's practicing some new tricks 'cuz that will make this season more fun. We've got a tough schedule.

The Bears are a cheap organization and havent been really relevant since back in1985 when Mike Ditka and Buddy Ryan were the coaches....The McCaskey's seem to always make the WRONG moves....when a team finds A GEM...PAY 'EM!..

The NFL will start a new tradition in 2023--- A BLACK FRIDAY AFTER THANKSIVING GAME broadcast by Amazon Prime! John Ourand of Sports Business Journal reported the news. Amazon is expected to pay something approaching $100 million for the rights to stream that single game on a Friday. The game will likely be played during the afternoon, as the league can’t televise prime time games on Friday nights in November as part of its antitrust exemption. This game will become part of the regular NFL schedule after that.

Dotson is mature beyond his rookie years, I really think the team picked a GEM. He talked about Wentz and the timing with the offense---

“...The deep stuff is kind of the footwork, timing, but the intermediate stuff is really where you can see the drastic difference. We’re still trying to figure things out, you know, we’re taking it day by day, like I said, and still trying to figure stuff out.”

“We’re still working stuff out in the playbook. I’m new to the playbook. Carson’s new to the playbook. So, we’re still trying to figure out the timing, the depth, the spacing, everything we need to be successful on the field. Those reps that we have in practice, RVA reps, the team reps, it’s all helping, and it’s all building to be great.”

John Keim had this to say---

Carson Wentz and the passing game have been inconsistent this summer as the Commanders work on their timing. Sometimes Wentz misfires; other times receivers run improper routes leading to off-target throws. But, on Tuesday, that group had one of its best days in camp.

Wentz was more on point with some of his throws, zipping one in to Terry McLaurin on an out route against tight coverage. Wentz threw more in rhythm during team drills, compared to past practices and capped one drive by connecting with receiver Dax Milne for a 20-yard touchdown in which he hit him in stride as he ran across to the corner of the end zone. Wentz also hit rookie Jahan Dotson for about 30 yards on a perfect throw down the right side. The passing game needs to keep progressing after an often bumpy start, but Tuesday was a good step. --

@Spurt

Quarterbacks get blamed for being inaccurate when it's often the receiver who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. A receiver taking a twelve yard route fifteen yards instead of twelve makes the QB look bad. The fans scream "He was wide open and the QB missed him!" It looks bad but the QB may have made the perfect throw.

Re: NFL News and Notes for August 2022!!!

Football is back! The Giants/Patriots play tonight at seven (ET). We'll get a chance to see how Daniel Jones looks in the new offense. Reports from camp have not been good. To be fair to Jones though this is I believe his fifth offense in four years, so, yeah, his head is more than a bit scrambled. He's never gotten the chance to get comfortable in an offense and that's just ruinous for a kid QB.

Adding to that, the Giants coaches decided to let the receivers freelance on their routes this season. They've been told to run the routes however they want, just get open. So, you've got a QB with a scrambled brain, not knowing where his receivers will be or when they'll be there. So, yeah. Nothing should go wrong there. It's not like it's important for the QB to know where his receivers will be.

The Giants appear to be setting things up to ensure Daniel Jones doesn't look good this year. That opens the door for them to move on from him in 2023 with a new rookie QB. By letting the receivers freelance and "just get open" they're forcing Daniel Jones to hold the ball longer until he sees them come open and once he sees them open the defense will see them open and close in on them. It's not a good system for Daniel Jones.

The Giants coaches and GM know the team owner still wants Jones to be given a chance, so they've built a system he can't succeed in to make it look like they're giving him a chance, but he can't succeed in this new system so then they'll be free to move on to a new kid QB they'll groom.

Daniel Jones would be a good reclamation project for the right head coach. (Andy Reid?) The kid has talent, he just needs some stability. Plop him into a single system for three or four years and let it become his native language and you can then learn what you've got in him.

Re: NFL News and Notes for August 2022!!!

The Eagles signed RB Deandre Torrey from the University of North Texas and my first reaction is...there's a University of North Texas? Yeah, there is. Apparently, it's a pretty good school too. Not necessarily a football powerhouse, but good academically. I don't ever remember hearing of them before this signing.

They've had two guys drafted to the pros since 2004 in LB Cody Spencer who the Raiders took in 2004 in the sixth round and then in 2021 the Bucs took WR Jaelon Dardon in the fourth. Mean Joe Greene of the Steelers is their most noted alumni.

We'll see what Deandre Torrey can do in the coming days/weeks. Not a tall back at 5'-7" but he's stocky at 200 (or so) lbs. He might be kind of a wrecking ball type of back good for short-yardage situations.

Re: NFL News and Notes for August 2022!!!

The Colts are concentrating on getting Quenton Nelson's contract extension. Something should be done in a week or so.

Saquon Barkley will play this evening. I don't know how long Jones or Barkley will be in the game, but both will be starting. Belichick hasn't said who the Patriots will start.

Youtube has a rendition of Aidan Hutchinson signing Billie Jean. Other Lions players join in near the end. He has a good voice; the video is quite entertaining.
