Yeah, that offseason tends to go on forever. It seems like a year already since the last Eagles game. Free agency is a little over a month away now. Then the draft buildup. Then the OTAs. Then training camp.

People are expecting this to be a crazier than normal offseason. We could see lots of QB movement if you believe the rumors. The league may look a lot different at the start of the 2023 season.

At the very least, I'm assuming something to happen with Deshaun Watson. He's one of what could be many moves made in the coming days/weeks.

I'm not sure what this Pro Bowl game is, but it's not football. I've played in more intense two-hand touch games. Everyone's just trotting, no tackling, random whistle blowing by the officials. Ugh!

I don't mind the change of pace. No one wants to get hurt, so I can see why they're playing like this. I can't believe all the intereceptions so far. The defenses have played better than the offenses.

Re: NFL News and Notes February 2022

The Texans have informed Jon Gannon that he's not getting hired. That means he'll be back with the Eagles next year. So, Brian Flores or Josh McCown for the Texans? I think they really want to hire McCown. We'll get the last jobs filled this week. The Texans, Dolphins, and Saints should be wrapping things up this week.

Mike McDaniel will be the Dolphins' new coach. That just leaves two slots to fill. The Texans and Saints still have vacancies.

Re: NFL News and Notes February 2022

The Texans seem to have abandoned the idea of hiring Josh McCown to be their head coach and have now moved on to Lovie Smith. Lovie has several benefits for them. One, he's already one of their coaches, and the players like him. Two, he'd likely be a cheaper option costing less than Brian Flores. Three, he's been a decent head coach in the past, so he has some experience. It'll probably be Lovie Smith for the win.

That leaves the Saints in a great spot. They're the last job open and there are a lot of aspiring head coaches out there thinking they may not get a head coaching job this year unless it's with the Saints. So, guys like Brian Flores, Kellen Moore, Eric Bieniemy, Aaron Glenn, Dennis Allen, and Byron Leftwich have pretty much lost their negotiating leverage and now have just one shot at an NFL head coaching gig. They can't go in and say, "I want to be the highest-paid new coach" or "I demand you replace the GM with my guy," and expect to have it happen. They're pretty much in the "Hey, I'll take whatever you want to give me," mode now. The "I'm trying to decide between this job and that job" option is off the table for them now. It's now back to being out of work, working as a coordinator for less money, or take whatever the Saints offer and be happy about it. It's a great spot for the Saints. The supposed cream of the crop in aspiring head coaches is still there and ripe for the picking.

That Saints' job, which may have been among the least attractive at the start of the offseason, now is the only one left. The Giants' job may have been worse, but the two are neck and neck for the worse job opening of the season. The Saints have a slightly better roster now, but they'll have to cut some guys to get under the cap which will hurt their roster. With no other head coaching options open, the Saints' job is now the most coveted and lots of really good coaches still need a job.

The good news from the Pro Bowl is no one sustained any serious injuries.  Former players (Deion Sanders among them) were not impressed by the "Look ma, no hands!" non-tackling and lack of aggression. They're all asking, "What the heck happened to football?" Yeah. That wasn't football. I've played in more physical two-hand touch games than that.

I like the idea of going back to the sixties style of NFL pros against the best college kids. If you've got the college kids playing in Senior Bowls, East-West Shrine games, why not match them up against the best pros and see how they do instead? The pros won't want to get embarrassed by the kids, so they'll play hard, and the kids will want to show the pros they belong, so they'll play hard. Kind of a win/win for the fans. Give the kids some experience under pro coaching and going head-to-head with pros.
