Baseball fans, do you remember pitcher Phil Niekro?

[ Edited ]

His crazy knuckleball pitches and his sad passing  at age 81 are a good read in today's Atlanta Journal Constitution on the sports page.

The catchers who had to try to catch his amazing  unpredictable pitches and others discuss their memories.  They include Bob Uecker, Joe Torre, Joe Casanova.

Look for the story on the newspaper's website, if you can get access to it.

The story notes that his team catchers needed "mettle and deserve a medal".  They loved the guy.

Here's a little about him from Wikipedia....

<<Philip Henry Niekro , nicknamed "Knucksie", was an American baseball pitcher who played 24 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), 20 of them with the Milwaukee / Atlanta Braves. Niekro's 318 career victories are the most by a knuckleball pitcher and rank 16th on MLB's all-time wins list. He won the National League (NL) Gold Glove Award five times, was selected for five All-Star teams, and led the league in victories twice and earned run average once.>>
