mixing black + brown

What are your thoughts on mixing black and brown accessories and clothes? For instance if you were wearing a black coat, would you carry a brown handbag? Or if you have on brown boots would you carry a black handbag? I tend to be strict about this, (matching) but lately I wonder if it's worth the effort because I see everyone else mixing. However, if you had a purple handbag, I would not expect it to match your coat or shoes. I just do this with black and brown. Do you feel that black and brown, or even tan and grey are all neutrals and can be mixed together? I have been wondering for awhile now if anyone's as nutty as I am about this.
