laptop backpack as personal carryon?

Next week I will be traveling on Delta, I would like to use my VB laptop backpack as my personal carryon (purse, briefcase, etc) and also take my 20" carryon luggage. Has anyone else done this with success or were you told the backpack was too big to be the personal carryon? It will not be stuffed full, it is mainly for my laptop and iPad, plus the basic handbag items like wallet, phone. I may put a piece of clothing in for padding.

The official measurements of the backpack are 16.5" x 12.25" c 5.5". It is an inch longer and 2 inches deeper than my briefcase. My laptop does not fit in the briefcase.
