adjustable hardware

On the east/west Collins bag, the adjustable strap that is on the bag itself, not on the handle. Is the leather the only part that pulls off the "nub" or does part of the "nub" come off with the leather? 1 side of the bag competely seperates from the "nub" and the other side doesnt.

I bought this bag on clearance at Macy's and Im thinking its defective? But I went to Macy's tonight and found the same bag at regular price. I pulled on 1 side an it does the same thing as my bag. I also pulled on the other side and it doesnt seperate, same as my bag.

Anyone know if this is how this bag works. My daughter tried to call customer service but were closed today. Thank you.
