Who started the Quilting style?

I think I saw it done in a Chanel (sp?) bag (some celebrity wore it). I have never been attracted to Dooney's quilting because I always think of a ski jacket (I dont know why). But this quilting in the Chanel bag was smaller, I really liked it. I will have to take a second look, since I cant afford the other brand.
