Re: Shoes/boots best for ice

@Spikedog - You don't say where you've moved to (so what kind of winter you're going to have).  We have a 710-foot driveway and we're in Northern New England.  In winter, I keep a pair of boots with YakTrax on, by the door, and wear them to go get the mail or if I have to walk across the yard, when it's icy.

I have plenty of other boots that are good in snow, but that one pair always has the YakTrax on all season.

And definitely - don't wear them inside or on anything else.  They're made to grip on ice.  You'd need to take other boots/shoes to change into, to drive or wear indoors.  If you don't want to go that route, rubber, deep-tread soles are your best bet.

And even with preventative measures - small steps!

Re: Shoes/boots best for ice

I swear by Yaxtrax!!  I purchased my first pair here many years ago.  They were beginning to show a little wear a couple of years ago so I ordered some from Amazon.  However, I'm still wearing my original pair and feel comforted knowing I have a spare pair of them.

I actually wore them this morning.

Re: Shoes/boots best for ice

If you're really worried about ice specifically, you're going to need the Yak Trax (or similar item) that everyone is talking about.

If you're simply worried about slippery conditions in general, a decent pair of snow boots should provide adequate traction.  However, you still have to be careful.  It's also helpful to have your hands free and available to break your fall.  In other words, in slippery conditions don't be shlepping packages and bags around.
