It eliminates the need for spurs.  The back part can be used to jab the horse to speed it up while the front stays firmly in the stirrip.

Wow, haven't seen this style since my date to a Halloween party in the early 80's dressed as 1/2 woman on his back side and 1/2 man on the front. He danced with two people at a time......and had shoes facing both directions. Oh well he was quite ahead of his time...

I hear ya! I broke my wrist when a cat darted out from nowhere and tripped me a couple of years ago.
