Your comment reminded me of something I saw years ago about closet organizing.   The woman's closet on display had dozens of shoe boxes.  She had taken a polaroid photo of each pair and attached it to the end that faced out so she could "see" the shoes while in their boxes.  If you have a LOT of shoes (or can't remember what you own)  I think that's a good idea.

We turned a spare bedroom into a closet.  I have shelves on the walls for shoes and purses.  Around 150 pair of shoes.  And many, many purses.  He golfs; I buy shoes and purses.

I've got a lot of shoes.  I store them in 2 of those round zip shoe holders I got from QVC.  I have 2 of them stored under the bed.  The bad thingis that i have to drag them out  once a week to vaccume under the bed. I'm looking for something more practical.

@Tinkrbl44   When I had my closet built in, I had shoe shelves installed along one wall floor to ceiling. I was sure to leave enough room to get my shoes/heels in and out easily and left 3-4 shelves with more space in height for boots.

I have two tiered shelving that goes around 3 walls of my walk in closet. One wall is boots, one wall spring/summer and one wall athletic & casual shoes. I have a 1 in 1 out rule and I don't use space below shelves as I like to be able to easily clean floor.

I am a ruthless organizer and purger. I would like to be able to say that I will pare down my shoes now that I have retired. But I am not there yet. I just love shoes and boots. Sigh.

Have fun organizing your closet. It's one of my favorite things to do.

I got that back of the door shoe organizer from HSN.  We have limited closet space and a lot of shoes were "lost."  This has helped immensely.
