I have a large collection of Dooney bags so I am not afraid to spend money on a high quality bag. But I refuse to pay over $200 for a cotton bag. Will not do it.

I would rather spend more on a bag that fits my lifestyle, I'm happy with and is well made. That could mean a coated cotton bag. I draw the line on getting something just because it's beautiful but not functional for me.

It really is a matter of individual preference. I like Dooney's coated cotton a lot and also like their nylon, though less so, but I prefer leather. I always seek the best price I can find and while I understand the reluctance to spend so much on a non-leather bag, I will occasionally do so if I can't find what I want on sale.
What I am increasingly refusing to do however, is to pay full retail and exorbitant shipping, which is then figured into the also ridiculous sum charged as state tax. It might be a small savings, but if an item ships free then at least tax isn't levied on the shipping fee... Note to Q: keep that in mind. I just backed out of a bag retailing for $360 dollars because by the time shipping was added and then tax was added to the whole sum, a $360 bag would've cost me over $400 to get home. That's too much. Although the EP is tempting, that figure still represents about twenty bucks more than I have to spend to get the same bag elsewhere, and that's assuming I can't find it on sale...

Stevieb: shipping costs are not taxable. The tax is applied to the purchase price only.

Tax on shipping must vary by state. In NYS, we are charged tax on shipping.

Yep, that's always been my experience here in Virginia too... It was with catalog sales before on-line shopping was much of an option and it now continues with on-line purchases. They add the shipping costs and then tax the whole enchilada...

I am also charged tax on shipping here in Texas.
As to the OP's topic, I purchase what I love and what I think is a good value, to me. As to cotton D&B bags, some of my favorites D&B bags are the Donnegal Crest cotton bags. My absolute favorite is a teal tote that came with a matching cosmetic case and key fob so it must have been a TSV back in the day. I've had it for years. Since the Donnegel Crest bags are only sold on QVC, or I guess later on EBay, I knew I wouldn't find them elsewhere. And just a note - these bags are not the coated cotton bags that D&B sells.
I am not a big fan of D&B's coated cotton bags though I do regret not purchasing one of their limited edition "theme" bags in this material. I wouldn't rule it out if I saw another pattern I really loved even if it was over $200.

In NY it is legal to tax shipping charges, but not mandatory. Of course, QVC does. I wonder who gets the extra cash?!

Wow, that's crazy!!! Shipping is "service", you are not "purchasing" it...so it shouldn't be taxed!!!

QVC charges tax after S&H. Some sites charge me no tax here in CA.
