About two months ago, I bought the Charleston shopper at Macys, but I had to return it because it had an overwhelming fishy smell. It was so bad that it began to stink up my car & my bedroom. I love D&B bags, so I thought I'd give it another try, in hopes that I wouldn't have the same problem. I ordered the rugby tote, which is adorable, but as soon as I unwrapped the tissue, I was overwhelmed with that horrible fishy odor!!! What is going on with this company? I've always known D&B to make the highest quality bags, but now it seems that they have NO quality control. I'm so disappointed that yet again, I have to return the bag.

I'm laughing right now, because I put up a storage rack for my bags in my bedroom, and theyre all stuffed and in their dust bags. A few weeks ago I was noticing this horrible fishy smell every time I walked in the room, and I could not for the life of me figure out what it was. Upon further inspection, it was the Dooney Flo Satchels, particularly the Natural. I never noticed that smell before, so maybe being wrapped up in the dustbag emphasized it. Anyway, I took that and the chestnut one out of their bags and hung them in another room. It's better now that some air is circulating around them, but if I smell up close it's definitley still there, and still faint around the storage rack.

It's got to be the leather, or the dye, or how it's processed or something. My black flo bag doesn't smell. It's more pebbled, and the ones that smell are smoother leather.

So it's actually not funny, but I thought I was crazy, so I'm relieved that someone else is noticing it too, though I'm sorry you are. What type of leather and what color are your bags? Have you hung them somewhere to air out?

I had the same problem with my Croco TSV that just arrived. Not only was there a piece missing from the bag, but that as the first thing I noticed, the smell was awful. I am returning it, don't care for the shade of pink, looked drab and almost dull and then of course, no cell phone case. I think that smell may be coming from the dye they use.

I think it's a horsey smell. It smells like horses and I love horses so I keep it. I heard one of the hosts say to the vendor once, oh, I love that smell. Well, I like my Dooney but it stinks and it's ok but what do other people think sitting next to you. I know it's not the dye, it's the leather.

I don't have a strong sense of smell. When I first got into purses, I would hear people talk about the great "leather smell" but I never really could detect any aroma on any of my bags. UNTIL I got my first Dooney Florentine, a pocket tote in Natural. I could smell that!!! I thought to myself, "So this is that amazing leather scent everyone raves about?" Smells like fish feet to me.

I just returned a Dillen bag and wallet to ILovedooney. The smell was like a protectant or water repellant chemical and it was STRONG? No leather smell at all.

I've worked for several footwear companies over the years. I was told when shoes have that fishy smell, it's actually the pesticides they spray on the items for their trip overseas where they're manufactured. Not sure if it's the same for dooney, but it could definitely be a possibility.

I love D & B, but have noticed a decline in quality recently. I've had bags that had a bad odor, but after airing out the odor went completely away. If it hadn't, I would have returned.

I think it's the pesticides. But it could be the processing or the dyes. Happens with many brands. Sometimes it can be 'aired out' by putting the handbag in a well aired space with open windows. (Remove all stuffing, plastic, paper, and dust bag first). Sometimes the handbag can't be aired out.

It's a very different smell than the smell of leather.

We generally don't notice the 'fish smell' in stores because the handbags have been sitting out and airing out. But sometimes when you take them home and put them in a sleeper bag the smell seems to grow again.
