My Fly London sandals have a back ankle strap with a velcro closure and I haven't had any issue.

I generally don't buy velcro, but I have a couple of pairs of Earth and the velcro has held up well.  However, I do have issues with my Alegrias, which I really have to tighten as far as they will go.  I don't think there is enough contact between the two sides because I have to pull them so tight they only connect on a small area.  Unfortunately that small area is not enough to keep them fastened.

I prefer buckles in general.

I have many brands with Velcro closures and have ever had that problem. But I have narrow feet, so there’s never any stress on the straps. Someone else mentioned that maybe you need wider width shoes. Could that be a possibility?
