I just cleaned out my spices, probably tossed about half of them.

I do write the date with a sharpie when a  new one goes in my cabinet.

Although I don't cook much anymore, I use a lot of spices & they get used up pretty regularly.  I only buy spices that I use, I don't buy a spice for just one recipe then never use it again.

I just treat it like anything in my pantry.   When I see anything that's been around for a while & hasn't been used, it gets tossed.  I don't have a lot of storage area.

There's a Penzey's store about 10 miles from me, I've been a couple of times, I do love the store.   The lady that runs it is so nice.    Mr Penzey is certifiable but if we were to know the head of all corporations like we know him, we would never buy anything.  He's only  harming himself, he's no danger to my lifestyle.

My spices are from the grocery store.  I write the purchase date on each before putting them in the spice drawer.

Common spices like cumin, basil, oregano, cinnamon, cloves, chili powders, paprika, get used up within about 8 months.   The less commonly used ones like bay leaves, ground mustard, poultry seasoning, rosemary, thyme, are replaced after 2 years.

I don’t buy turmeric or pickling spices these days, as I only used them when I made home canned pickles and relish.  I don’t buy spices like coriander, cilantro, or curry, as I don’t cook the foods requiring them.

My girls are really bad to buy an expensive spice to make one interesting recipe, that they never like, which is just pure waste to me.

@RedTop  I freeze my bay leaves in a vacuum-sealed plastic storage bag to keep them flavorful for as long as possible.  It seems to work for me.

I get most of my spices at Sams unless the grocery store is having a big sale, then the price evens out.  I keep them in the freezer.

I purchase my spices from Penzey's.  I love the fact I can get the small size in any spice.  The only larger sizes I buy are cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder and cinnamon.  They have a spice called Pico Fruta that is delicious sprinkled over fresh melon.   I use a lot of spices.

Purchase Spice Islands, only - same as Alex G. on Food Network, though have been purchasing that brand for decades.  Always wait for a sale.

Will not purchase Penzy's.  Do not agree with..........

I bought a jar of Spice Islands ground ginger when I had a $1.00 off coupon.  I find it to be every bit as tasty as my usual Penzey ginger.

@sfnative   Lol! That’s exactly why I purchase Penzy’s! Very important.

Not to veer off topic, but I buy whole spices whenever possible, then grind or grate as needed.

Strive for respect instead of attention. It lasts longer.
