Re: recipe for kicked up canned beans?

You should get a lot of ideas from the good cooks on here.    I can point you in one direction; but you'd have to Google for exact fix-ins.

At a picnic once a lady brought the best dish ever...in a crockpot she had  made it  with every known bean under the sun.    It was on the sweet side - perhaps brown sugar - maple syrup - molasses.

The bowl was empty so fast..........everybody wanted seconds

I drain some of the liquid from a couple cans of baked beans.  Add about a half cup of Sweet Baby Rays bbq sauce.  Cut a few slices of bacon (uncooked) in half, and lay on top.  Sometimes I add chopped onion if have it on hand.

Bake around 300 degrees for at least a couple hours til they thicken.  Yum!

(I found it helped them thicken to drain a bit of the liquid first.)

Add sautéed onion and chopped jalapeños with cooked bacon, garlic and brown sugar to your taste.  The BBQ sauce suggestion works well too.

I always added ketchup, brown sugar and mustard to canned baked beans. And I would cook it with pork chops. After cooking for awhile it "aged" the baked beans and they were in a nice thick sauce.

Re: recipe for kicked up canned beans?

This is a meal in one dish.  I do not know how name originated.  I've had recipe for years.

California Beans

2 cans (28 oz...or equivalent small cans) baked beans

1 lb. bacon

1 1/2 lbs. ground beef

1 cup light brown sugar

1 cup BBQ sauce

1 envelope dry onion soup

Brown and drain ground beef.  Cook and crumble bacon.  Mix all ingredients together well.  Put in baking dish.  Bake at 350 for 1 hour.

Another....

Baked Beans

2 (20 oz or equivalent small) cans baked beans

1 small can crushed pineapple

1/4 cup chili sace

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard

1 medium onion, chopped

1/2 lb. bacon, diced

Saute' onions and bacon until tender; drain fat.  Combine all ingredients and put in 9x13" baking dish or large casserole dish.  Bake at 300 for 2 hours (uncover 1st hour; cover 2nd hour.

I always embellish Bush's baked beans with either fresh or frozen chopped onion and green pepper, plus a little yellow mustard and ketchup.

Other additions might be sliced frankfurters, some type of smoked sausage such as Kielbasa,  or diced ham, which can almost make it a full meal in one pot.

No longer have a slow cooker, but I have always preferred to really "bake" the baked beans in a slow oven in an enameled cast iron pot.  Stovetop cooking of bean dishes like this doesn't appeal to me.

I always cook my onions and peppers in ketchup, brown sugar, mustard and any seasoning you want like a little BBQ sauce, etc. first before adding to the canned beans. A hint I read about a long time ago is to add a smidgen of instant coffee to the liquid to dissolve. It adds so much flavor to the beans for some reason.

Re: recipe for kicked up canned beans?

Something has happened to my taste buds and I no longer care for Bush's baked beans, or anyone's baked beans, for that matter.  They just come across as too sweet.  So I've subbed pinto beans, red beans, black beans , or whatever for recipes.  Isn't there a 15 bean mix in the dried bean section?
