Re: not all sour cream is the same

@SXMGirl,

Are you tossing it because it separates, or for another reason?   I just used the last of a container I opened in May, and it was fine, except for water coming to the top.   I never toss sour cream unless I see mold.    I am just curious as to your criteria that it’s gone bad.

Re: not all sour cream is the same

@RedTop, I am tossing it because the smell is off.  I do quite a ibit of baking that is given to my students and the homeless shelter and do not want any problems because the sour cream is off.  There is no mold but I don't want to eat anything made with something that has a smell that just is not right.

The next time that I hear salt and ice together, it better be in a margarita!

Re: not all sour cream is the same

@SXMGirl When I open a container of sour cream I don't completely detach the inner seal.  I scoop out what I need, close the inner seal and then make sure the outer cover is on securely and put the container back in the refrigerator upside down.

I read that trick somewhere several years ago and it really improves its shelf life.

Re: not all sour cream is the same

When we left San Francisco, I lost the ability to purchase "Berkeley Farms" dairy products, which are excellent.  Always purchased their buttermilk and sour cream.

At the end of last week, I started to make quark, a soft German cheese I planned to use in making a coffee cake.  The darn buttermilk my husband purchased (the cheap stuff) was labeled "buttermilk," but the bacteria had died, so my 3 cups of quark came to nothing, so had to pour it down the sink.

How I wish I had had some Berkeley Farms buttermilk!

Wegman’s brand is the best from all store brands.

Re: not all sour cream is the same

@SANNA, thanks.  The next time that I get to Wegman's (not sure when that will ever be since we don't have one), I will give theirs a try.  I guess that I will need to plan a cruise out of Baltimore so that I can shop at Wegman's.

@aroc3435, I will give that a try.  Never thought about the seal.

@sfnative, never heard of that brand, so it must be found only in the SF area?

Re: not all sour cream is the same

if you have a problem with the sour cream goig bad, then call the comapny. they need to know.  it may be the way that the store is handling the product.  they may not keep it cool all the time.  either way, the company needs to know.
