I've made this since the early 80's. Try it with a lemon cake mix
Orange tasted like a baby aspirin - LOL.

Well, shucks...I have seen and even saved recipes of Paula Deen's for the Ooey Gooey cakes, but this one wasn't titled the same, so it fooled me!
Here's the Pumpkin one I saved before (I'm including other variations, plus some Recipe Swap posters' comments. I'm not sure whose comments are at the end:
Paula Deen -Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cake plus variations
Ingredients
Cake:
1 (18 1/4-ounce) package yellow cake mix
1 egg
8 tablespoons butter, melted
Filling:
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (15-ounce) can pumpkin
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
8 tablespoons butter, melted
1 (16-ounce) box powdered sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Combine the cake mix, egg, and butter and mix well with an electric mixer. Pat the mixture into the bottom of a lightly greased 13 by 9-inch baking pan.
To make the filling: In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and pumpkin until smooth. Add the eggs, vanilla, and butter, and beat together. Next, add the powdered sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and mix well. Spread pumpkin mixture over cake batter and bake for 40 to 50 minutes. Make sure not to overbake as the center should be a little gooey.
Serve with fresh whipped cream.
Variations: For a Pineapple Gooey Cake: Instead of the pumpkin, add a drained 20-ounce can of crushed pineapple to the cream cheese filling. Proceed as directed above.
For a Banana Gooey Cake: Prepare cream cheese filling as directed, beating in 2 ripe bananas instead of the pumpkin. Proceed as directed above.
For a Peanut Butter Gooey Cake: Use a chocolate cake mix. Add 1 cup creamy peanut butter to the cream cheese filling instead of the pumpkin. Proceed as directed above.
note2baby - I had it about 2 thanksgivings ago... it was good.
I make the strawberry and peach ones over the summer and they turned out great. I used a spice cake mix and fresh peaches. ... then strawberry cake mix and fresh berries. yummm
JPC - I have made one variation of Paula's Ooey Gooey Butter Cake. Mine had the toffee bits in and on top of it. It was so very good. I haven't tried all the others yet
Here are other Variations on the cake:
Pumpkin Gooey: This variation has to be at the top of my list, especially around Thanksgiving. For the cake part, I sometimes use a spice cake mix. I have even used a chocolate cake mix, but I think my favorite is the basic yellow cake mix. Follow the original recipe, adding a 15-ounce can of pumpkin pie filling and an extra egg to the cream cheese filling. Bake as usual, remove from oven, and allow to cool. Cut into squares and top each square with a pecan half. Serve with a dollop of fresh whipped cream. I promise you'll never want pumpkin pie again!
Pineapple Gooey: Add a 20-ounce can of drained crushed pineapple and an extra egg to the cream cheese filling. Proceed as directed above.
Lemon Gooey: Use a lemon cake mix in place of the yellow cake. Add the juice (approximately 1/4 cup) and zest of 2 lemons to the cream cheese filling. Proceed: as directed above.
Carrot Cake Gooey: Use a spice cake mix, and add 1 cup chopped nuts and 1 1/2 cup finely grated carrots to the cream cheese filling. Proceed as directed above.
Peanut Butter Gooey: Use a chocolate cake mix. Add 1 cup creamy peanut butter and an extra egg to cream cheese filling. You can sprinkle the top of batter with 1 cup chopped peanuts if you like. Proceed as directed above.
Chocolate Chip Gooey: Use either yellow or chocolate cake mix. Sprinkle 1 cup chocolate chips and 1 cup chopped nuts on top of filling. Proceed as directed above.
Banana Gooey: Use a yellow cake mix. Prepare cream cheese filling as directed, beating in 2 ripe bananas and an extra egg. Proceed as directed above.
Nutty Gooey: Use a yellow cake mix, and add 1 cup chopped nuts to the cake mixture. Proceed as directed above.
Chippy Gooey: Stir 1 cup white chocolate chips, peanut butter chocolate chips, butterscotch morsels, Heath Almond Toffee Bits or Heath Milk Chocolate Toffee Bits into filling. Proceed as directed above.
*** 1 cup for each substitution in toppings.
Peach Gooey: Spice cake mix and sliced peaches.
Blackberry: Spice cake and frozen defrosted blackberries.
Cranberry: Strawberry cake mix, whole berry cranberry sauce.
Make the Gooey Butter Cake posted above but use sweet potatoes instead of the pumpkin. It is sooo goood!!!!!

This cake is also good made with a spice cake mix. I also make it with a chocolate mix and add 3/4-1 cup of peanut butter to the filling.
The last time I made it, I couldn't find the nutmeg, so I used 1-1/2 tsp of Pumpkin Pie Spice...... Give that a try and you won't be sorry......

I made the pumpkin version but used 2 cups of cooked Sweet Potatoes instead, and used 1 teaspoon of nutmeg, and left out the cinnamon.
When I got to meet Paula Deen about 10 years ago at her restaurant, I told her about doing this!!!

Thanks for posting the other add-ins. I am always stumped as to what kind of DIFFERENT cake to prepare. I recently made a dump cake and I was not impressed. It was way to sweet or something. I just did not care for it.
