Who on here needs a recipe for Tomato Pie....Or share your own...

If you have never had a Southern Tomato Pie, then you are missing out.....Do not take this recipe as a YUK moment...but rather an OMG, where have I been, and where has this recipe been all of my life moment.....Tomato season is coming in, and I do not want you to miss out.....

Tomato Pie

Ingredients

4 tomatoes, peeled and sliced

10 fresh basil leaves, chopped (I have, and do use dried cilantro)

1/2 cup chopped green onion (I have and will use fresh chopped red onion)

1 (9-inch) prebaked deep dish pie shell

1 cup grated mozzarella

1 cup grated cheddar

1 cup mayonnaise

Salt and pepper

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Place the tomatoes in a colander in the sink in 1 layer. Sprinkle with salt and allow to drain for 10 minutes. ( I do this for at least 30 minutes for best results)
  3. Layer the tomato slices, basil, and onion in pie shell. Season with salt and pepper. Combine the grated cheeses and mayonnaise together.( I do this while the tomatoes are draining) Spread mixture on top of the tomatoes and bake for 30 minutes or until lightly browned.
  4. To serve, cut into slices and serve warm.

This is a far cry from what we in Philadelphia call a "tomato pie", but it certainly looks delicious and I like the sound of the recipe so I'll be copying it down and giving it a try in the very near future.  Thanks for posting this @forrestwolf !

Love tomato pie.  I make it frequently during the summer when I have tomatoes coming out of my gazooks. I grow my own basil too-nothing better than tomatoes and basil.  It's a Southern thing- most people up north never heard of it.  My recipe is identical to yours.  I make sure to give it a good 10 minute or so rest after removing it from the oven.  this helps it to "settle" and be a little less juicy.

@Citrine1  OK, please, give me what you think of when someone says "tomato pie"....Very interested in your version....I was married to a Vermonter, and he said he had never had such until he had mine....and he NEVER turned away a slice!!

@forrestwolf  Glad to share our Philadelphia tomato pie!  Some (not all) pizza shops make it.  It's basically just the dough and tomato sauce.  No cheese.  That's it.  Depending on where you buy it, it can be quite good.

Edited to add:  Sorry, forgot to say that there are usually spices on it.  Maybe some ground Italian spices, garlic, crushed red pepper.

@Citrine1  So, are you saying this is a type of pizza pie?? As, that is not what a tomato pie is, if that is the case, as this is an actual pie....Just asking....

Re: Who on here needs a recipe for Tomato Pie....Or share your own...

Yes @forrestwolf , it's a type of pizza pie.  It's pizza crust (not pie crust like your recipe), and tomato sauce.  Well, pizza sauce I guess.  Basically a pizza without cheese.  So when you are in Philly and someone says they want a tomato pie, that is what we think of.

After I make your recipe, though, I'll probably never think of tomato pie in the same way!

Oh I just had another thought @forrestwolf .  Yes, sorry I wasn't clear in my first post when I didn't give a thorough explanation about the crust.  See, I'm so used to knowing about my "version" of tomato pie, I guess I just assumed you would know I was talking about pizza crust and not pie crust!

Yes, that is pretty much how I make mine, but I usually just eyeball it, I dont measure anything... I never peel my tomatoes and I usually use Jack cheese instead of Mozzarella- i will use chives  instead of basil  too, depends what I have growing in the garden- I always use green onions though..and sprinkle a little parmesan on the top for a little salty crunch- I LOVE tomato pie!
