@SouthernBee I was talking to my middle sister earlier this year about family birthday celebrations. When we were growing up Ma had cake and ice cream (usually neopolitan). My eldest sister had 2 kids and when her kids had a birthday there was cake and ice cream. My two nieces? They do cake - no ice cream. I don't know what went wrong there 
If the local ice cream parlor is open, I've gone to niece's kids birthday gatherings, had cake and then I get some ice cream on the way home. It seems half-baked if you don't have the ice cream. Oh well, kids these days.
