Unless you check with the hosts first, I would not recommend bringing food. Many hosts have menus meticulously planned and you could be throwing a wrench into those plans. I know it sounds petty, but I've been on both ends of that situation and I suggest avoiding it.
I have a very small house, and with guests and holiday decorations there is no place for extra flowers and fussy stuff. However, when we visit my SIL, she counts on us to bring a beautiful centerpiece for the table. If you're going to do something like that, just clear it with the hosts first.
Everyone is different, but I generally experience what I call PTHD - post traumatic hostess disorder - and need time to recover after all the work and frenzy of entertaining. I would suggest bringing something the hosts can use when the crowd has moved on and the dust has settled - perhaps spa passes or a gift card to a nice restaurant.
