What to Substitute for Diced Green Chile Peppers

I am getting ready to make white (chicken) chili since we are snowed in & unable to attend the Super Bowl party we were invited to. My recipe calls for a 4 1/2 oz can of diced green chile peppers & I must have used the can I had in the pantry without realizing it was the last one. I do have a jar of salsa verde on hand. Would this work, & how much would you use? Thanks

Is it mild salsa verde? If it is, I'd match it ounce by ounce to the recipe for green Chilis. If it's medium of spicy I'd cut it in half or more. Canned green Chilis are very mild. I think that would be fine and I can't really think of anything better to substitute for the canned green chow. I bet it willbe great

Are you asking for suggestions or saying that is all you have? Either way, I think the recipe is what it is. It's that or nothing and if you use salsa verde, you have a whole nother new recipe which may/may not be good.

Diced green chilies have no heat and not much flavor so I don't think it would even matter if you left them out.

Re: What to Substitute for Diced Green Chile Peppers

It may not be what you intended to make but somebody does it!

Chicken and White Bean Chili

Ingredients

  • 4 teaspoons olive oil
  • 2 pounds ground chicken
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed with a press
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
  • Two 15 to 19-ounce cans white kidney beans (cannellini), rinsed and drained
  • One 16-ounce jar mild salsa verde
  • One 14 to 14 1/2-ounce can reduced-sodium chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro leaves, for garnish

Directions

In a 6-quart Dutch oven, heat 1 teaspoon oil on medium-high until very hot. Sprinkle the chicken with 1 teaspoon salt. Add the chicken to the Dutch oven in two batches, and cook until the chicken is no longer pink, stirring occasionally, about 6 minutes per batch, and adding 1 teaspoon more oil for the second batch. With a slotted spoon, transfer the chicken to a medium bowl once it is done.

After all the chicken is cooked, add the remaining 2 teaspoons oil with the garlic and onions to the Dutch oven, and cook on medium heat until browned, stirring occasionally, 5 to 6 minutes. Stir in the cumin, oregano, cinnamon and cayenne pepper, and cook 1 minute. Add the beans, salsa verde, broth and browned chicken, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium, cover and cook the chili for 15 minutes to blend the flavors. To serve, garnish with cilantro.

LOL. I felt the same way but figured someone would disagree. I am so happy you said this. I will not fear it next time. It is true.

This!

You can substitute a fresh, green bell pepper. Add some hot sauce if you want heat.

Get your flu shot...because I didn't.

It will be fine. Before you add it, taste it to see how hot it is and add to your recipe to taste.....that is, the amount you think adds flavor but doesn't overpower the other ingredients.

Re: What to Substitute for Diced Green Chile Peppers

Thanks for the quick replies. The jar I have is Trader Joes & is rated mild in the label. Zhillis, my recipe is similar, but the seasoning is different. It has 4-6 tsps chili powder, 1 tsp cumin, & 1 tbsp cilantro, in addition to 1 C diced onion & 2 tsp minced garlic. It also calls for 32 oz chicken broth & 3 1/2 C water. Since it makes a lot, I wanted to share some with a friend who is recuperating from a broken hip. Namealreadytaken, I was asking because we probably have 8 inches of snow, it is still snowing & the plows have not been out. The salsa verde is all I have. You are all the greatest!

Re: What to Substitute for Diced Green Chile Peppers

Thanks, HonnyB, I do have a green pepper. Nomless & CAshopper, great input. I think I will start with 2 oz & evaluate to see if it needs more. The friend & her dh like spicy, so don't have be real concerned about that.
