Re: What do you make at home, better than you can get at a restaurant?

Meatloaf with Ann Lander's recipe.  Potato salad, my recipe.  Chocolate chip walnut raisin oatmeal cookies.  Other than those three I am known for absolutely nothing in the food category.

Re: What do you make at home, better than you can get at a restaurant?

1.  Meatballs

2.  Gravy (the red kind - or as you medagans refer to it as "tomato sauce" or "spaghetti sauce" Smiley Happy

3.  Cheesecake.  I was asked by a restaurant to give them the recipe after making the owner one.

4.  Homemade pasta, especially gnocchi

5.  Chocolate chip cookies

6.  Stuffing for turkey.  And the turkey.  The secret is lots of white whine in the roasting pan.  And a side glass doesn't hurt either  Smiley Very Happy

7.  Grilled marinated pork tenderloin

I could go on....but I don't want to make you drool.

No one makes a meat loaf as well as I do.  No one.  There have been studies.

@Peaches McPhee   Please post your recipe.  I've been looking for a good meatloaf recipe and haven't found it yet...

@KatieB:

meat loaf

ground beef (90%)

breadcrumbs

whole egg

worchester sauce

Ketchup

cut up onion

No amounts to worry about, just blend together until you can shape it into a loaf shape and it holds the shape.  If it is too dry, add ketchup.  If it is too wet, add breadcrumbs.

Pour ketchup over the top - this is the best part, it forms a "glaze".

Cook until done (I often cut mine in half to see if it is done on the inside).

@Pook

Thank you!!

Ground pepperoni, huh? That is interesting!

@Qshopper1991

"...and a side glass..." Smiley Happy That'll do it, all right!

We're on the same wave length. I roast my turkey in sherry.

We'll be the judge! What day would you like us over? Smiley Happy

@qualitygal, et.al.

Here is my meatloaf. I can't give exact measurements, because it depends on how much ground meat I use.

Meat Loaf

Sautéed onion & celery in EVOO, butter and a pinch of sugar (the sugar will kill any onion aftertaste); season w/ S&P, a pinch of dried sweet basil

Add to:

Ground beef

Sprinkle w/ bread crumbs (Italian seasoned or Panko)

(not too much because this makes the meatloaf tough)

Sprinkle w/ apple pie spice, allspice, S&P, hot pepper flakes, dried or fresh flat leaf parsley, splash of Worchestershire sauce

Brown sugar

1 egg

Mix until combined.

Preheat roaster in 400 degree oven.

When roaster is ready, add butter (it will melt) and EVOO.

Dump mixture into center of pan and form a loaf (I use 2 wooden spoons)

Sauce topping:

Catsup

Brown sugar

Worchestershire sauce

Mix together and spread over top of loaf.

Add dry sherry to the pan, surrounding the meatloaf

Optional: Add baby carrots to the sides of the pan; sprinkle w/ S&P

Bake in 400-degree oven for about 1 and a half.

I love to eat out at upscale restaurants.  I always order something that is too much trouble to make at home.

The only thing I can think of is chili - not that mine is necessarily better, but I make it the way we like it (with noodles).

With the exception of pizza and Mexican food, pretty much everything.  It's not that I'm a great cook, it speaks more to the lack of quality and the pre-made foods in restaurants.  😊

I am a pretty good cook, most everything I make is better at home except pizza. I gave up making pizza.

everything! I am an awesome cook and I can  control the ingredients, but most of all, I know the food I eat is made with clean hands and a clean environment

@Peaches McPhee

GOOD FOR YOU.  Would love you to share your recipe secret.  I'm a pretty good cook, but just never really like my meatloaf and I've tried making it lots of different ways.
