I saw a sign posted on the grocery store shelves today that said Del Monte has advised them to warn consumers a shortage of canned fruit, vegetables and tomato products is imminent.

Is this because of the drought in California? The only canned product I usually buy is diced tomatoes - maybe I better stock up!

They didn't expound on it, but I presume this is the issue. I, too, usually just use canned tomatoes, but I remember seeing a thread here recently that cautioned the pumpkin crop won't be good this year either.

Bummer for everybody. ![]()
I try to purchase California produce as much as possible and also have been known to use some Del Monte products. It seems like I might be the only one, but Del Monte Ketchup is the only one I buy. The other one, that seems to be the #1 popular brand, tastes like straight-up vinegar to me.
As for another pumpkin shortage - no es bueno. I buy a lot of canned pumpkin puree, as Ru gets a spoonful with his breakfast each day, plus I make a pie or cake, or quick bread every now and then, plus I use it in the 'birdie bread' that I make for the bird.
What I've been doing is to purchase a whole year's supply at the beginning of every fall so that I don't have to worry about it for the year. This last fall I seem to have over-bought so maybe that will work out.

Thanks for the heads up. I know that we are going to have shortages due to the drought, but somehow it didn't occur to me that canned foods would also run short. Duh!

I was in Aldi last night and there was a sign on the Eggs apologizing for the price increase due to a National Egg Shortage. Yikes.

Thanks for the tip.

The egg shortage has nothing to do with the weather in California. There is an outbreak of avian flu wiich is impacting the poultry industry. It has been going on for several months.
Perhaps you have been insulated from the rising prices ,but every week the price of eggs goes up in CA.

I was just telling DH this morning that the price of eggs has gone haywire. Thanks for posting. I didn't know the reason for it.
