I used to add ginger and curry to the dressing, and serve with chutney

The original was only three ingredients:  Apples, celery and mayonnaise.  It wasn't long before walnuts were added.  According to someone I knew whose father knew the chef who invented it at the Waldorf.

My Mom used to make it with apples, celery, raisins, walnuts and the dressing was mayo with either powdered or brown sugar mixed into it.

Very simple, when my brother would make it, he added chopped iceberg lettuce.

I like it both ways.  I don't make it often, it seems like a fall/winter dish.

If I want to keep it healthy, no dressing. Heart

Is Waldorf salad the same as "Ambrosia?" I think it has marshmallows in it...my Auntie used to make it back in the day.

@MarnieRez3, no - Waldorf salad is not the same. Ambrosia generally has mandarin oranges, pineapple chunks, maybe some grapes and marshmallows with a sour cream/mayo dressing.

Re: Waldorf Salad

@MarnieRez3...I love Ambrosia salad - here's the one I use, although there are many varieties.

2 - 8 oz cans pineapple chunks, drained

1 cup miniature marshmallows

2 - 11 oz cans Mandarin oranges, drained

8 oz. sour cream

1 cup shredded coconut

Mix all together except oranges. Fold oranges in last. Chill for a few hours.

@jannabelle1

Thank you so much - you are a doll to post this! I remember the sour cream plays so well with the sweet fruit. It was quite a popular dessert back in the day...my Auntie always brought it to pot lucks and family dinners.

I really appreciate your posting this, Jannabelle - so sweet of you! Heart

I used to make it on Easter.  Apples, celery and toasted walnuts.  Dressing was 1/2 mayo and 1/2 sour cream with some lemon juice.

This is mine with pecans and no grapes.  Just apples, celery, pecans and mayo.  So good.
